“We are entering the digital era … a little late … but entering it we are!” said Chris Winstanley, chairperson of The Algarveans Experimental Theatre Group, when revealing the new ways that tickets can be purchased for the group’s production of “Ladies’ Day” by Amanda Whittington. Following discussions with Lagoa Town Hall and a recent change in the law, the group is having to change the way it sells tickets for their shows and, in future, audience members will be able to buy them online or in person at numerous locations. Algarve artists Brigitte von Humboldt and Vera Christians are opening their next exhibition ‘Transparências e Migrações’ at the Museu do Traje in São Brás de Alportel on Saturday, March 9 at 7pm. The colourful and expressive paintings of v. Humboldt and Christians can be seen until May 6, from Monday to Sunday, 2pm to 5pm. A west coast group supporting their local animal shelter is hosting a charity Carnaval party on Saturday, March 2. The Friends of AEZA are staging the event at the Restaurant Vale da Telha, aiming to raise funds that will help build feeding stations for the area’s street cats. The group was created to supports Aljezur’s animal welfare charity AEZA (association for environment and animal protection of Aljezur), a non-profit association whose main objective is to provide abandoned animals decent conditions to live in, with shelter, food, care and health care. The Friends of AEZA stage a number of events through the year to provide financial support for the shelter. And this latest venture is taking place in the build-up to Portugal’s Carnaval 2019 which is to be celebrated on Tuesday, March 5. COLIN BRATHWAITE won the outstanding achievement prize in the sporting awards category of the inaugural Henley Heroes awards last year, Mr Brathwaite, 47, of St Mark’s Road, Henley, led the Henley Skatepark Initiative, which successfully campaigned for a £290,000 “wheeled sports facility” to be installed at Makins recreation ground, off Greys Road. The skate park opened in August 2017 following a six-year campaign by the group, which was supported by the town council. It replaced a rapidly deteriorating skate park on the same site, which was 13 years old and nearing the end of its life, with a concrete one. The new facility has sunken obstacles rather than hollow metal ones, which reduces the noise, and caters for BMX bikers, skateboarders and roller-skaters. Algarveanimal.com has been launched by veterinarian student Luisa Canário in a bid to provide “easy to access and useful information” about animal welfare in the Algarve. The website contains information in Portuguese and English about where you can adopt animals or find them if they are lost, the sterilisation programmes that are available in the region, and advice on what to do if you witness cases of animal abuse or see chained animals. Currently studying veterinarian medicine at Évora University, Luísa was one of the organisers of the animal rights march that was held in her hometown of Faro last September.
