Local rivalries are believed to have caused a mass brawl at Leicester's King Power Stadium. A huge fight marred a boxing event over the weekend, where around 150 fans are believed to have travelled from Nottingham to Leicester to watch proceedings. The match was Nottinghamshire's Brad Daws' professional debut, against Nicaraguan Elvis Guillen, report the Leicester Mercury. But things turned ugly in the crowd after a verbal altercation ended in punches being thrown, before others weighed in. Promoter Carl Greaves told Nottinghamshire Live : "There was a large Nottingham following there, and that didn't go down well. "I didn't put two and two together with the rivalry between Nottingham and Leicester fans. "[Brad Daws's] fans were singing about Nottingham, and the Leicester fans didn't like it. "The Nottingham lads were told to quiet down, but didn't. "Scuffling started, and chairs got thrown. But security stopped it quite quickly." He added: "Brad doesn't follow football, but obviously … [Read more...] about Shock mass brawl at boxing event with as chairs fly and punches thrown

Anthony Joshua has vowed to “beat the fight” out of Alexander Povetkin when they clash at Wembley on Saturday. Joshua was in belligerent mood at Wednesday’s public work-outs at the iconic York Hall in Bethnal Green. The undefeated world heavyweight king did the briefest of sessions with trainer Rob McCracken before promising to take out former WBA champ Povetkin. Povetkin poses a different threat to Joshua’s last victim Joseph Parker because the Russian is shorter and famed for landing destructive left hooks. Joshua believes he has the game plan to take care of Povetkin, whose only pro loss in his 35 fights was to Wladimir Klitschko in 2013. “Defend and counter,” he said. “Defend and counter, that’s the key. Start with some combinations and then pick him off. That shuts opponents down. “I have to beat the fight out of him. “I’ve got to look out for everything. Everything, left hooks, you name it. “Ultimately … [Read more...] about Anthony Joshua makes promise to Alexander Povetkin
Tyson Fury has been told that losing to Deontay Wilder will blow his chance of ever fighting Anthony Joshua . Former undisputed heavyweight champion Fury and current WBC king Wilder are set to announce they will clash on December 1 — probably at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Promoter Eddie Hearn suspects Fury is cashing in because he is not ready for the step back up to world level after almost three years out of the ring and says he will have no box-office value for fellow Brit and four-belt champ Joshua if he is defeated by the American. “If Fury gets beat, he’s done,” he said. “If Fury gets knocked out in that fight, the AJ fight will never happen. “I don’t think there’s any doubt that he’s cashing out. “I’m sure Fury thinks he can win, because that’s what fighters do — they believe they can win fights. But he’s smart enough to know in his mind he’s nowhere near ready. I don’t think, if you … [Read more...] about Tyson Fury warned he’ll never fight Anthony Joshua if he loses to Deontay Wilder
Anthony Joshua has been told by Amir Khan he must crack America to become a truly global star. Khan says he is recognised all over the world because of his US success, and the former light-welterweight world champion has fought there 10 times, headlining in Las Vegas and at New York's Madison Square Garden. He claims fellow Brit and unbeaten four-belt heavyweight king Joshua — who defends his belts against former world champ Alexander Povetkin at Wembley Stadium on Saturday — would become an even bigger star if he also fought Stateside. “Yeah, if you want to be global, you have to go to America,” said Khan. “My dream was to fight in Las Vegas, Madison Square Garden — all those places where Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson fought. “And whatever is shown in America is shown all over the world. I started to become a bigger name by fighting in America. “People in Pakistan started recognising me. When I had my first fights in England, no-one in … [Read more...] about Anthony Joshua told he needs to make a big change if he wants truly global fame
