SOME 200 people have been rescued by Spain’s coastguard off the coast of Andalucia.The maritime rescue service Salvamento Marítimo has picked up 183 people attempting to make the dangerous crossing from North Africa to Spain.This has brought the total number of people rescued in the Western Mediterranean to nearly 400 in just the last week.According the Spanish rescue service a further 73 migrants, including ten children, had been rescued from three boats in the Straits of Gibraltar.Meanwhile another 110 people have been taken to Malaga after being rescued in the Alboran Sea. SPAIN has issued an international alert over its worst ever outbreak of listeriosis as the number of victims rose to 150 people with one person dying. The Health Ministry is also checking 523 suspected cases as it was revealed that a surge in cases of listeriosis was first detected in July. Most of the cases confirmed so far have been in Sevilla and the Andalucian region, although there have been cases in Madrid and Catalonia. More than 50 people remain in hospital including 23 pregnant women who are particularly at risk, as are those with low immune symptoms. So far one 90-year-old woman has died in Sevilla and two miscarriages have been blamed on the outbreak. Now Spain’s Health Ministry has issued alerts to EU authorities and the World Health Organisation worried that tourists may have been exposed to the bug. The travel company Tulana , which specialises in market research , found that after asking Spaniards what their favourite holiday destination was, most of them declared Spain as their first choice for relaxation and recreation. In terms o f specific destinations, Andaluc ia, Levante and Galicia won in the polls but more generally, anywhere with a beach was vastly more popular than anywhere inland. According to the study conducted by Tulana only 28 per cent of Spaniards leave the country to go on holid ay.
