America’s largest tech giants would have the public believe that they’re patriotic firms, fighting the good fight for our values at home and abroad. The truth is that these companies are breathtakingly cynical actors who wrap themselves in the Stars and Stripes and then discard them at their earliest convenience. For firms such as Google, Apple, Facebook (Meta) and Amazon to make the case that they are American businesses being unfairly targeted because of their success in order to provide European companies with a competitive edge is disingenuous bordering on laughable, but the tech giants hope to hire enough highly paid lobbyists to smother the truth under a mountain of gold-plated rubbish. But there’s an old saying: by their fruits, ye shall know them. Big Tech’s fruits – their actions – are not patriotic. In fact, they are amoral. American values of free speech, democracy, free enterprise, tough but fair free market competition, and paying what you owe in taxes (not a penny … [Read more...] about Big Tech isn’t patriotic, it’s amoral and cynical

Google Chrome only blocking a quarter of phishing websites, researchers claim
Google’s Chrome web browser is only preventing users from visiting around a quarter of suspicious sites that are likely to be part of phishing scams, Which? has claimed. The consumer group said a study searching the web addresses of 800 newly discovered phishing sites in a web browser saw Chrome block only 28% when used on Windows and 25% on an Apple Mac computer. Which? said it performed the same test across a number of other web browsers, with Mozilla’s Firefox performing the best by blocking access to 85% of sites when used on Windows and 78% on Mac – the best result on both platforms. Phishing scams are those where criminals create messages that look genuine in order to trick consumers into clicking a link to a bogus website where viruses could be installed on their device, or having them hand over personal information which can be used to gain access to financial information or online bank accounts. In response to the findings, a Google spokesman said: … [Read more...] about Google Chrome only blocking a quarter of phishing websites, researchers claim
Apple responds to criticism of App Store by highlighting reports on developers’ earnings
Apple has defended itself against ongoing criticism of the App Store by pointing to the earnings of developers. The company has faced sustained objections to its control over the store, which is the only way to get games and apps onto the iPhone and iPad. Some developers have argued that control means that Apple is able to exercise unfair control over the App Store, including the 30 per cent cut that it takes from every transaction that is made on it. It has now pointed to new research that showed the UK app economy on Apple‘s iOS mobile platform saw record growth in 2021, supporting more than 440,000 jobs - more than anywhere else in Europe, the technology giant has said. A new report on Apple‘s App Store and its economy said the earnings of smaller UK app developers have grown by 84 per cent in the last two years, with the number of smaller developers joining the App Store up by 40 per cent. Removing just one enzyme reversed Alzheimer’s disease in mice
An experimental treatment completely reversed Alzheimer's disease in mice by reducing the levels of a single enzyme in the animals' brains. The results further bolster the theory that amyloid plaques are at the root of this mysterious brain disease, and that addressing these plaques could lead to an eventual cure for Alzheimer's. The study , published February 14 in the Journal of Experimental Medicine , found that slowly reducing levels of the enzyme BACE1 in mice as they aged either prevented or reversed the formation of amyloid plaques in the brain, a hallmark sign of Alzheimer's disease. Related: Alzheimer's science shocked by discovery that key protein behaves like and infection Amyloid plaques , formed when bits of protein clump together in the brain, are found in high amounts in Alzheimer's patients. BACE1 is a protein that naturally forms in the brain and helps produce beta-amyloid peptide, a protein also involved with brain plaque formation. Scientists at the … [Read more...] about Removing just one enzyme reversed Alzheimer’s disease in mice
Briton has double hand transplant in ‘world’s first’ for scleroderma patient
A man whose hands were left unusable by a rare disease has been given a new lease of life after what is believed to be the world's first double hand transplant for the condition. Steven Gallagher, 48, was diagnosed with scleroderma, an autoimmune disease that causes scarring of the skin and internal organs, after he developed an unusual rash about 13 years ago. Areas including his nose, mouth and hands were affected and, about seven years ago, his fingers started curling in until they were in a fist position and he was suffering "horrendous" pain. When experts suggested the idea of a double hand transplant the father-of-three initially dismissed the idea but then decided to go ahead despite the risks. He told the PA news agency: "My wife and I spoke about it and came to the agreement to go for it. I could end up losing my hands anyway, so it was just a case of letting them know I was going to go with it." Inside Dyson’s top secret robot prototypes designed to do all of your household chores
Dyson , the company best known for the Hoover, has unveiled a 'top-secret' project more than a decade in the making: an army of super-smart robots capable of performing household chores. The company, founded by Sir James Dyson, has unveiled photographs and videos of some of its incredible robot prototypes, which can clean furniture, pick up toys off the floor, and even unstack the dishes. Dyson says it has been working on the robots for around 10 years in partnership with Imperial College London . The reason it has finally gone public is because it wants to hire 700 robotics engineers to help build its army of androids. Dyson's Chief Engineer and multi-millionaire heir to the Dyson empire, Jake Dyson, shows off how the robots work in the impressive video of the company's 'arm room'. At one point he shows a robotic arm mapping an armchair in 3D. "So this means I'll never ever find crisps down the back of my sofa again. Ever." As well as running four robotics facilities … [Read more...] about Inside Dyson’s top secret robot prototypes designed to do all of your household chores

Alexa records your conversations – here’s how to listen to them, and delete them
It should be no secret that if you invite a device that records speech into your home, it's going to record your speech.... even if you're not explicitly talking to it. As recently as this week, an ex-Amazon boss admitted that he turns his Alexa devices to protect his privacy. Ex-Amazon employee Robert Frederick told the BBC in a Panorama special called ‘Amazon: What They Know About Us’ that he turns off Amazon's Alexa "whenever [he] wants to have a private moment." Alexa's system operates on 'wake words' – phrases or words that will trigger the device to become active and start recording you, even without your explicit content, because it thinks it picks up on you saying its name. Latest Games News Some of your conversations will then be sent to Amazon employees – known as 'graders' – who listen to and transcribe the audio. It's been reported that Amazon has had access to recordings of users' sexual activities, family rows and discussions about … [Read more...] about Alexa records your conversations – here’s how to listen to them, and delete them
Elon Musk locks horns with Bill Gates amid claims ex-Microsoft CEO funds his critics
The world's current richest man is locking horns with the world's former richest man once more, as SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has responded to claims that fellow billionaire Bill Gates is funding his critics. Musk tweeted 'sigh' on Tuesday in response to an article claiming the Gates Foundation donated 'hundreds of millions of dollars' to a campaign callling for a boycott of Twitter if Musk takes over. The article claims that the Gates Foundation donated money to 11 out of 26 of those who signed an open letter supporting the boycott. The spat follows criticism of Musk by Gates, who said Musk could make misinformation 'worse' by buying Twitter. Gates reportedly said: "He could actually make it worse. That's not his track record. His track record with Tesla and SpaceX is pretty mind-blowing at putting together a great team of engineers and taking people who work in those fields in a less bold way and really showing them up. "I kind of doubt that'll happen this time but we … [Read more...] about Elon Musk locks horns with Bill Gates amid claims ex-Microsoft CEO funds his critics
