Most employees have experienced the dreaded annual performance review – being given feedback from their boss on what they’ve done right, and wrong, over the past year. These meetings are universally unpopular: Jim Heskett, writing for the Harvard Business School in 2006, said employee performance reviews ranked “alongside root canal dental work on [the] list of things we look forward to as managers and employees”, while a survey by the US-based Society for Human Resource Management found that 95pc of employees were dissatisfied with their employers’ appraisal process. A number of companies have already done away with performance reviews, which can be traced back to the US army’s “merit rating”... … [Read more...] about It may be time to do away with annual performance reviews for good
Much of the damage from Washington’s trade war has already been done. Huawei has now produced a smartphone that contains no US-made parts at all, eradicating American businesses from the supply chain. With Donald Trump stepping up his campaign against the Chinese technology behemoth at the Nato summit this week, the chance of a digital iron curtain dividing East and West has now increased substantially. An analysis by UBS and Japanese technology laboratory Fomalhaut Techno Solutions found Huawei’s Mate 30 phone contained not a single US-sourced component. This followed the US Commerce Department’s move to blacklist the communications equipment maker. Of course, many other of its products are... … [Read more...] about Huawei is at the vanguard of a looming digital divide
There is nothing quite like winter in the Scottish hills. The days are short, the sun is low, the light transforms from fug to crystal to honey in the briefest of moments. On New Year’s Eve 10 years ago, I stood on the summit of Ben Macdui in the Cairngorms looking out across thick cloud and a gleaming plateau. As an undergraduate, I made many inspiring trips to the Highlands with my university mountaineering club. Along with the bluebird days, we also experienced challenging conditions. Blizzards, white-outs, deep snow, icy slopes, freezing winds … conditions can change in the blink of an eye. For Heather Morning, safety adviser for Mountaineering Scotland, Scotland’s mountains in winter offer a “magically beautiful, yet harsh and challenging environment. Underfoot and overhead conditions require knowledge and … [Read more...] about Cold mountain: a winter skills course in the Scottish Highlands
We need to talk about WhatsApp. When the little green speech bubble first showed up in my life, I greeted it with awe and wonder. I even wrote a little love letter to its ability to connect with a virtual black sisterhood – the kind that rarely exists in our too-undiverse workplaces in real life – in my first book. It became the perfect platform to share experiences, frustrations, strategies and ideas. WhatsApp group communities proliferated on my phone – they were education, community and activism all in one place. It was great. Until it wasn’t. Groups grow too big, don’t they? Then personalities clashed, unleashed from the restraint of real life by the notorious rudeness of social media. Then a WhatsApp safe space was shattered, as one group member leaked confidential material shared by another, showing it to their boss to gain favour at work. The mutual trust and community that took years to build was poisoned in an instant, and so was someone’s … [Read more...] about Has WhatsApp become a potential career assassin?
