Android and iOS smartphone users need to be on guard about a new Covid Pass scam. This pass is available to access on the NHS App and on a dedicated NHS website, and is used to show proof that you’ve been double vaccinated or for test results. The pass may need to be shown when attending events or venues in the UK, as well as for when you’re travelling abroad.
However, cybercriminals are using this vital tool to help fight the coronavirus pandemic as a way to extort personal information, money and financial details from concerned victims.
Action Fraud – the UK’s national fraud and cyber reporting centre – has reminded people to beware of any messages asking for payment to access the Covid Pass service.
In a tweet this week the @ActionFraudUK account posted: “Watch out for COVID Pass fraud.
“The NHS App is free. The NHS COVID Pass is free. The NHS will never ask for payment or any financial details.”
While in a post online Action Fraud revealed text messages, emails and phone calls are being sent from scammers pretending to be a part of the NHS – who are offering fake vaccine certificates.

Immediate red flags should be if you’re asking for money or financial details in exchange for accessing a Covid Pass.
Action Fraud said: “Criminals are using the NHS COVID Pass as a way to target the public by convincing them to hand over money, financial details and personal information.
“They are sending imitation text messages, emails and making phone calls pretending to be from the NHS, and offering fake vaccine certificates for sale online and through social media.
“If you are contacted about your NHS COVID Pass: Be alert to links and attachments in unexpected text messages or emails.
“Do not respond to requests for money, passwords or financial details. Challenge: Could it be fake? Use the official NHS COVID Pass website.”
If you want to view your Covid Pass this can be done in the official NHS smartphone app.

Bear in mind the app you require is the NHS app used for managing doctors appointments and ordering repeat prescriptions.
It’s the NHS Covid-19 track and trace app.
If you can also access your NHS Covid Pass by heading to www.nhs.uk/nhscovidpass.
The news comes as the NHS Covid Pass earlier this week became compulsory for those looking to attend a nightclub in Wales.
This also applies for indoor non-seated events with over 500 people, such as a concert, outdoor non-seated events of more than 4,000 and for any event with over 10,000 people.
Speaking about this, Welsh economy minister Vaughan Gething said: “The Covid Pass is just one of a series of measures in place to help prevent people spreading and catching coronavirus while helping to keep the economy open.
“None of us want to see further lockdowns and for businesses to have to close their doors once again.
“Showing a Covid Pass is already part of our collective effort to keep businesses open, with some major events, such as the successful Green Man Festival, using it.
“Together, if we all continue to follow the clear guidelines we're all used to by now, we'll be doing everything we can to keep Wales safe.”
Scotland will also be using Covid passes for the same aforementioned settings, but this is only taking effect on October 18.
In England plans for vaccine passports, which had been due to start at the end of September, have been dropped.
However, the Government has said it could be introduced this winter if cases surge.
Northern Ireland also does not have a formal Covid-19 vaccine passport scheme.
