Meghan Markle was a "huge missed opportunity" for the Royal Family according to British TV presenter Trisha Goddard.
Her comments come after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry sat down with US chat show legend Oprah Winfrey for an "intimate" and "wide-ranging" discussion.
The highly anticipated programme aired in the UK on Monday evening on ITV.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as senior members of the Royal Family last year.
Speaking to BBC Newsnight, Ms Goddard explained how the Duchess was "a huge beam of light" as a senior royal.
A former Australian politician has heaped praise on the Queen during the latest edition of BBC Newsnight.
Alexander Downer, the former Australian High Commissioner to the UK, said Australia is currently preoccupied with issues like the coronavirus pandemic and would not hold a referendum about becoming a republic.
He said such vote could take place when the Monarch dies as she enjoys "huge admiration" from the Australian public.
Mr Downer said former Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull's Australian republic referendum of 1999 could take place again in a bid to keep the matter "in some sort of perspective."
‘Straight up evil’ Meghan Markle’s ex-colleague rages at Buckingham Palace (Image: Getty)
Meghan Markle’s ex-colleague has raged on Twitter in response to the Duke and Duchess Sussex's' interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Screenwriter and producer, Kate Sargeant, came out in support of the Duchess accusing Buckingham Palace's actions as "straight up evil."
Sargeant worked with Meghan on an episode of the crime drama, Castle, back in 2012.
She penned on Twitter: "I worked with Meghan Markle on an episode of Castle I wrote and she was absolutely lovely and the utmost professional.
"My heart broke for her last night.
"And the fact that the 'institution' is still attacking her when they know she was on the verge of suicide is straight up evil."
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have sent a touching letter and gift to the ladies of the Grenfell Community Kitchen in celebration of International Women's Day.
The Duke, 36, and Duchess of Sussex, 39, praised the "inspiring" group of women and thanked them for their service to the Grenfell community.
The Sussexes have been long-time supporters of the initiative who they first visited back in 2018.
The Hubb Community kitchen was set up to support and provide hot meals for families following the Grenfell fire, which killed 72 people and left many more homeless on June 14, 2017.
Princess Diana is getting her “revenge” on the Royal Family “from beyond the grave”, according to Andrew Morton after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey aired on Sunday evening.
Meghan Markle has been harshly criticised on social media by Donald Trump's allies following her no-holds-barred interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Meghan and Prince Harry issued scathing claims about their time as working members of the Royal Family during the two-hour long conversation.
Friends of the former US President took aim at the couple in a series of Twitter posts, with one accusing them of performing a "publicity stunt".
A family photo of Meghan Markle, Prince Harry and Archie has been released hours after they told Oprah Winfrey they are expecting a baby girl in a bombshell interview.
Prince Harry has reportedly been asked to return to the UK to visit Prince Philip who has spent several days in the hospital.
Prince Philip, 99, underwent a successful procedure for a pre-existing heart condition at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in the City of London on Wednesday – just three months before his 100th birthday. The Duke of Edinburgh has left the NHS hospital where he had heart surgery and been moved back to the private King Edward VII’s Hospital for continuing treatment, Buckingham Palace said.
Royal expert Katie Nicholl said there are unconfirmed reports that Prince Harry has been “asked to come home”.

10.40pm update: Queen ‘doesn’t buy’ all of Meghan and Harry’s interview claims
Royal author Penny Junor said: “I think this response is dignified. It is leaving Harry and Meghan some dignity and it’s expressing that they will always be much-loved members of the family.
“It says that they are saddened to learn how challenging those years were for Meghan and Harry.
“They are saying ‘we didn’t appreciate quite how tough it was for you, you’ve raised an issue of race, which is worrying to us, and while some recollections may vary, we hear what you’re saying and will look closely and address any failings we find’.
“So they are saying we don’t buy everything you’ve accused us of.
“I think the route, as far as I was concerned, was to reply in sorrow rather than anger, which is what they’ve done.”
Andrew Neil has revealed he is “game” for interviewing Meghan Markle and Prince Harry after the pair sat down with US talk show host Oprah Winfrey.
Mr Neil, who is widely viewed as Britain’s toughest interviewer, said on Twitter he is willing to grill the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
A Twitter user suggested: “A consensus that Andrew Neil should do the Meghan and Harry follow-up interview.”
Mr Neil, who is launching new television channel GB News, replied: “I’m game.”

7.35pm update: Harry faces backlash over ‘trapped’ claims
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been attacked for their comments that they felt trapped in the Royal Family by a royal expert.
Royal commentator Russell Myers insisted that Harry and Meghan’s comments on being trapped in the Royal Family were extraordinary.
While speaking about the interview on the show True Royalty, Mr Myers explained why he disagreed and voiced his appreciation for the Queen’s dedication.
6.20pm update: Camilla joins Charles for royal engagement
Camilla today joined Prince Charles for a royal engagement after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The Duchess of Cornwall, 73, and the Prince of Wales, 72, met NHS and Ministry of Defence staff involved in the UK’s coronavirus vaccine rollout during a visit to Skipton House in London.
Camilla looked chic in a navy blue and cream dress which she teamed with knee-high black boots and a small handbag for the royal visit on Tuesday.
Earlier today, heir to the throne Charles made an appearance at an NHS pop-up vaccine clinic in a north-west London church.
Buckingham Palace issued a statement on behalf of the Queen saying: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.
“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.
“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been blasted as “arrogant” after expecting to keep their taxpayer-funded security despite quitting royal duties and moving across the pond.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex expressed shock at the loss of their protection during their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.
But former chief superintendent Dai Davies, who led the Metropolitan Police's royalty protection unit, said he was “gobsmacked” Meghan and Harry expected British taxpayers to continue forking out millions of pounds for their security in the wake of Megxit.
He told the Daily Mail: “It shows you their naivety and sense of entitlement. It was utterly unrealistic to think they could continue to have their royal protection team working in America – in fact it would have put their [police] lives at risk.”
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have sparked fury for keeping their royal titles while “deliberately damaging” the monarchy in their quest for financial independence.
Historian Andrew Roberts wrote in the Telegraph: “Harry and Meghan ought to resign their HRH titles and the Duchy of Sussex forthwith. Questions of whether they should have these titles removed should be beside the point.
“If they truly believe the monarchy to be quite so unpleasant and dangerous, and threatening to mental health, why would they not take the honourable way out of it as soon as possible?
“The monarchy has lasted a thousand years and will clearly survive this. Its strength is that it is a family and thus the passage of time always brings forward new personalities to take the place of the old.
“The Sussexes will live their lives in wealth and luxury in sunny California, but they should do so as Mr Harry Wales and Ms Meghan Markle, for why should they want to carry the escutcheon of an institution that they clearly dislike, despise, and even supposedly fear?”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have spent the majority of their time in Sandringham over the past few months, choosing to spend the whole of the third lockdown there.
But it has since emerged the couple have returned to the capital with their three children, Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, five, and Prince Louis, two.
Their return to Kensington Palace coincides with the national reopening of schools, which sees George and Charlotte return to the classroom yesterday.
Prince William has been pictured for the first following an explosive interview by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
The Duke of Cambridge was pictured driving through London looking tired and stressed after his brother The Duke of Sussex said his brother was "trapped" within the Royal Family.
Speaking to Oprah Winfrey on CBS, The Duke of Sussex said: "They don't get to leave. And I have huge compassion for that."

Downing Street has repeatedly refused to distance itself from an attack on Meghan Markle and Prince Harry for “blowing up the Royal Family” with Boris Johnson drawn into the explosive row.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey threw the Royal Family into crisis yesterday, with a series of serious allegations levelled at the monarchy.
The couple accused a member of the family of making a racist remark about the skin colour of their first child and of failing to provide help when the Duchess was struggling with her mental health.
Last night Government minister Lord Goldsmith rejected claims the pair had “dropped bomb after heavy bomb on Buckingham Palace”, saying they had launched a direct attack against the Duke’s family.
He said “Harry is blowing up his family” as he spread to blame Meghan Markle, adding: “What Meghan wants, Meghan gets.”
Asked on five occasions if Mr Johnson disagreed with the comments this afternoon, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman refused to comment.
The official also confirmed Mr Johnson had sat down to watch the interview when it aired on ITV last night despite the Prime Minister previously saying he would “probably miss it”.
Joe Biden’s press secretary heaped praise on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex yesterday, thanking the couple for opening up on their experiences of mental health.
But Express.co.uk readers have hit out at the US President, and claimed Mr Biden shouldn’t have responded to the interview at all.
One person said: “This just goes to show how much of a donkey Biden is. He should have shown some diplomacy and kept his trap shut.I hope this odious man is never invited to the UK, special relationship or not. As for Harry and his wife, I am absolutely disgusted with them they have no shame.”
One person even suggested the US President should start paying for the couple’s security – something that has been a contentious topic since the Duke and Duchess decided to step down as senior members of the Royal Family last year.
They wrote: “Excellent he can pay for their security.”
The Prince of Wales carried out a royal engagement this morning, just hours after his son Prince Harry revealed the pair fell out over the Duke’s decision to step down as a senior working royal.

Bonnie Greer told Channel 5’s Jeremy Vine that the Oprah Winfrey interview is a “catastrophe” for the Royal Family and the UK’s perception in the US.
The Kingston University Chancellor also compared the UK to an “old lady you visit and discover to have dead bodies in the basement” in a stunning dig at Britain.
Ms Greer said: “It’s the United Kingdom that is at fault.
“I love this country and it has been really good to me, I am heartbroken about this.”
She added: “People are saying ‘what kind of country is that, which allows something like this to happen?’ so it’s about the UK.”
10.50am update: ‘I’m cross with Harry & Meghan’ Jennie Bond FURIOUS
Queen Elizabeth II “is in distress” following the aftermath of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Jennie Bond told ITV’s Good Morning Britain that Queen Elizabeth II is concerned regarding the claims made by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in their tell-all interview with Oprah. The royal commentator added that the Palace is “in a lot of trouble” following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview.
Ms Bond said: “I’m cross with Harry and Meghan for imposing extra suffering on the Queen.”
Meghan Markle’s claim her passport, keys and driving licence were removed from her possession when she joined the Royal Family was one of many bombshells dropped by the Duchess during her sitdown with Oprah Winfrey.
Speaking to Oprah, Meghan said: “When I joined that family, that was the last time – until we came here – that I saw my passport, my driver’s licence, my keys.
“All that gets turned over. I didn’t see any of that anymore.”
The Duchess described struggling and feeling isolated after joining the institution and claimed she was not given adequate support.
Oprah Winfrey was “ill-advised” to rule out Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip over racist claims made by Meghan Markle in the bombshell interview.
The Duchess of Sussex made the staggering claim someone in the Royal Family questioned the colour of baby Archie’s skin colour before he was born. Harry and Meghan both refused to name the person who made the comments during the interview.
However, after the interview was aired in the US on Sunday, Oprah Winfrey confirmed it was not the Queen or her husband who made the comments.
But human rights activist Peter Tatchell said by ruling out the Queen and Philip it “narrows the field” of who it could be.
He told Express.co.uk: “Given that Harry and Meghan didn’t want to name the person, it was very ill-advised for Oprah Winfrey to rule out the Queen and Prince Philip. That rather does narrow the field and will lead a lot of people to speculate it was either Charles, Camilla or William.”
Thomas Markle has launched a scathing attack on his son-in-law Prince Harry and brought up the 16-year-old scandal where the royal dressed in a Nazi uniform for fancy dress party.
Mr Markle told hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid he regretted staging paparazzi photographs ahead of Meghan’s wedding to harry in May 2018.
In the couple’s chat with Oprah Winfrey, which aired in the UK last night, Meghan said she felt “betrayed” by her father’s actions.
Commenting on this, Mr Markle said: “I wish I hadn't done the whole thing. But here's the other side of the coin. No one took any time to protect any member of our family. We were attacked by the press every day.”
Mr Markle then decided to make a dig at Prince Harry, and said: “And in spite of all that, I still apologised, I’m apologising today again… I also said we all make mistakes… but I’ve never played naked pool and I’ve never dressed up like Hitler.”
Meghan’s father is referring to a 2005 fancy dress party where the Duke of Sussex dressed in a Nazi uniform.
Harry quickly apologised for wearing the SS uniform with a swastika armband.
Prince Harry has been accused of “disrespecting” the monarchy by a royal expert amid calls to have him taken off the line of succession.
Speaking to ITV Good Morning Britain, Mr Jobson said: “Ministers are saying it’s nothing to do with them but unfortunately it is to do with them. Parliament is sovereign and the reality here is, Prince Harry is disrespecting the Royal Family and is sixth in line to the throne.
“One day we could get a situation, it might not happen, but if something were to happen to Prince Charles and William, he would then be called upon to be a regent to a young Prince George.
“Is that acceptable? If he wasn’t good enough then Prince Andrew would do it. That’s not acceptable.
“Prince Harry and Meghan want to be private people, that’s fine, do it. But then they have to be out of the line of succession, not have the titles and move on.”

Thomas Markle said Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey is the first time he has heard her speak in four years.
Meghan Markle’s father has said the last time he spoke to his daughter was in the hospital after he had a heart attack.
Thomas Markle appeared on ITV’s Good Morning Britain on Tuesday to react to the interview the Duke and Duchess of Sussex gave talk show host Oprah Winfrey.
Mr Markle apologised to his daughter for his conduct in the run-up to her wedding to Prince Harry but urged her to get in touch with him.
8.15am update: Prince Philip health update
Prince Philip is due to spend his 22nd day in hospital as the fallout from Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s bombshell interview with Oprah consumes the Royal Family.
The Duke is due to spend another day in hospital, having been transferred back to King Edward VII private hospital in Marylebone, London after successful heart surgery at St Bartholomew’s last week.
Buckingham Palace has not issued a new statement on the Duke’s health since last week.
Piers Morgan walked off Good Morning Britain at the start of Tuesday’s programme as the host clashed with weather presenter Alex Beresford over the interview Meghan Markle and her husband Prince Harry gave with Oprah Winfrey.
The Good Morning Britain team spoke about the claims Meghan Markle, 39, and Prince Harry, 36, made that a member of the Royal Family expressed concerns about the colour of their son Archie's skin before he was born. As the panel conversed on the matter, the outspoken journalist ended up walking off the set as he clashed with his co-star.
The weather touched a nerve as he said to Piers: "And I understand you've got a personal relationship with Meghan Markle or you had one and she cut you off.
"She's entitled to cut you off if she wants to. Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don't think she has and yet you continue to trash her."
The host was then seen stepping away from the desk as he told the team: "I'm done with this. See you later.”
