The number of new confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK has fallen by almost 40 per cent in a week and deaths have declined by a third, new figures show. There were a further 6,035 lab-confirmed infections – the lowest daily increase since September – bringing Britain’s pandemic total to 4,176,554 as of Sunday. The Government reported another 144 deaths within 28 days of a positive test for an overall toll of 122,849, the fifth highest in the world. Separate figures published by the UK's statistics agencies for deaths where Covid-19 has been mentioned on the death certificate, together with additional data on deaths that have occurred in recent days, show there have now been 143,000 deaths involving coronavirus in the UK. Daily death tolls tend to be lower on Sundays and Mondays due to a weekend reporting lag, resulting in spikes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
