OTT emerged as a big platform, theatres were badly affected
Bollywood faced a slump of nearly nine months when theatres were closed down due to the health scare. The year began on a high note with ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’ and entertainment swiftly migrated to OTT. Summing the year film distributor Akshaye Rathi told ETimes, “The first quarter of the calendar was absolutely terrific but obviously since March, after the lockdown was imposed, nine months with no business has been extremely painful. After re-opening, one trend that is emerging is that there are advance bookings and shows are going houseful even with the restricted occupancy. So I think that the public is more than willing to come to the cinema because all they want is content that excites. Businesses is certainly picking up. And I think it’s only a matter of time before a big ticket, exciting film comes by the engines are heated up all over again.” As movies started releasing on OTT and web series picked up steam during lockdown, theatres started facing the ill-effects of such platforms. However, positive that things will change for the better, Akshaye added, “Right now it may seem like OTT is substituting or giving cinemas a run for their money. But I truly believe that both aren’t really in competition with each other. OTT is in competition with TV just the way theatres are in competition with entertainment mediums outside your home.”

Sushant Singh Rajput’s death and the drugs controversy
Sadness swept over Bollywood as the news of talented actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s tragic demise was reported on June 14. A theory about the late actor suffering from depression had also surfaced since anti-depressants were reportedly found at his residence. The Supreme Court ruled that the Central Bureau of Investigation should take the matter in hands while the Enforcement Directorate (ED) probed a money laundering angle in the case. One thing led to another and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) was involved for alleged drug abuse in Bollywood. Noted Bollywood celebrities like Deepika Padukone, Sara Ali Khan, Shraddha Kapoor and Rakul Preet Singh were questioned by the NCB. The 34 year old actor’s death cast a dark shadow on the industry while the All India Medical Sciences (AIIMS) concluded that Sushant Singh Rajput was not murdered but it was a case of ‘hanging and death by suicide’. Last heard, fans of the late actor are still awaiting a final word from the CBI.
