Suzuki first introduced the Katana back in 1981 and the production for the street bike continued until 2006. Suzuki resurrected the iconic name last year. So, what exactly was the Katana all about and why will it not hit the Indian shores by 2020? Read more to find out.
The Suzuki Katana was more of a street bike for people who are not looking for sharp dynamics like that of the GSX-S1000. Moreover, during the 2020 Auto Expo, Suzuki for the first time displayed the entire BS6 lineup of their domestic motorcycles. The centre stage in the pavilion was taken by the Suzuki Katana (not available in our country).
Now, displaying the motorcycle at the Expo meant that the company is planning to launch the product sometime soon. But that was not the case with the Katana. According to an interview held by AutoCar India with Koichiro Hirao, Managing Director, Suzuki Motorcycle India, and Devashish Handa, Vice President, Suzuki Motorcycle India, who said that the motorcycle will not be able to hit the Indian shores in 2020.
The reason the motorcycle will not come to India is that the Katana which is sold internationally is not a BS6 compliant one. Once the motorcycle has been updated to meet the current pollution norms, Suzuki India will look into the customer interest before deciding to launch the Katana here.
Hirao also stated that the surveys for customer interest will take up some months and the company also needs time to update the motorcycle. Taking into consideration all the factors, we expect the Suzuki Katana to launch in India somewhere in 2021.
At the front, the Suzuki Katana gets an all-LED rectangular headlamp which follows an old-school look. The suspension set up on the Suzuki Katana consists of a fully adjustable KYB 43mm USD fork and a link-type monoshock unit adjustable for preload and rebound damping. Braking duties are handled by Brembo radial calipers.
Mechanically, the Katana is powered by the same 999cc inline-four, liquid-cooled engine which also powers the GSX-S1000F. The unit is capable of making 150bhp at 10,000rpm and 108Nm of peak torque at 9,500rpm. Other features include a slipper-clutch, a three-level traction control system, and dual-channel ABS.
Thoughts On The Suzuki Katana
The Katana has been one of the iconic motorcycles from the company’s portfolio. The motorcycle just looks fabulous and has that old school charm to it. Once launched in India, we are sure that the company will find a lot of buyers.
