Unless Donald Trump ensures an American spy’s wife returns to Britain to be questioned by police over the death of a teenage motorcyclist, the so-called Special Relationship is worthless.
Diplomatic immunity exists to stop hostile regimes persecuting envoys and must never be a Get Out of Jail Free card in road accidents.
We reveal today that chief suspect Anne Sacoolas, who fled after young motorcyclist Harry Dunn was killed while her car was allegedly driven on the wrong side of the road, was fined 13 years ago in the US for being distracted while driving.
If US police wanted to speak to a UK diplomat who had returned home swiftly after a crash the Daily Mirror would demand our national go back to answer questions.
Harry’s family deserve justice and international conventions require review to ensure immunity isn’t abused.
In the meantime we urge the US president to demand Sacoolas’s immunity is waived.
Old age rebels
Extinction Rebellion protesters arrested in London include an 83-year-old for allegedly spraying a slogan demanding “life not death” for his grandchildren.
This shows older folk, not just the young, are responding to the climate emergency which poses an immediate threat to our planet.
The frustration of drivers and passengers trapped in jams is understandable and the loose-knit group needs to beware of angering rather than inspiring the public.
But the general good humour of non-violent Extinction Rebellion is refreshing after the thuggery of Far Right marches. And never forget the climate emergency threatens us all.
