Grimsby MP Melanie Onn has said she believes it is “inconceivable” that the Government could continue to argue the case for leaving the European Union without a deal after the publication of a document outlining the risks it could bring.
But Martin Vickers, who represents Cleethorpes, said ministers were being highly responsible in their preparations for Brexit.
Details of the Government’s Operation Yellowhammer contingency plan for a no-deal scenario have been made public after MPs voted to force the document’s release.
It outlines “reasonable worst case assumptions” such as rising food prices and a reduction of medical supplies.
The report also details how “protests and counter-protests” could take place as well as a number of “local shortages” in parts of the country should the UK leave the EU without a deal on October 31.
Ms Onn said the report, some details of which were blacked out, showed a no-deal scernario would damage Grimsby’s economy, put jobs and health at risk and see the “lowest income groups” hit hardest by food and fuel price increases.
The Labour MP said the Government had blacked out parts of the documents dealing with the petrochemicals industry, which directly provides hundreds of jobs on the south Humber bank and hundreds more in the supply chain.
She also raised concerns over the harm a planned zero per cent tariff could do to the whole sector, potentially opening the door to cheap fuel dumping.
Ms Onn said: “It is inconceivable that any 21-century Government, or any political party, can continue to argue to leave the EU without a deal.
“The Government’s own risk assessments show how deeply irresponsible Boris Johnson’s plans would be for the people of Grimsby.
“The Yellowhammer release leaves many questions to be answered and MPs should be sat in Parliament to ask them.
“Instead Boris Johnson has shut down Parliament – and MPs’ ability to hold him to account – for five weeks.
“Despite pressure from hard-line Brexiteers, I feel strongly that my position, to stand firm, stand up for the people of Grimsby, their livelihoods and health while honouring the 2016 referendum was the right thing to do.
“Unlike Boris Johnson and the Conservatives, I will not play fast and loose with people’s lives.”
Conservative MP Mr Vickers said the Prime Minister had his full support in working to deliver a deal.
He said: “The Government is being highly responsible in preparations for Brexit.
“Operation Yellowhammer is just the worst case scenario that we’ve had to plan for. Boris is working to deliver a deal, which is what the people of North East Lincolnshire voted for.
“He has my full support in achieving this and it seems as though others have failed to note our extensive Brexit preparations.
“We’ve been planning to avoid all the problems we can and have reassured the supply of vital resources like food and medicine after Brexit.”
