Grant McCann faced the media this afternoon in the build-up to Hull City’s return to Championship action against Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
The Tigers head coach had not spoken publicly since the closure of the European transfer window left both Markus Henriksen and David Milinkovic part of his plans until at least January.
The departure of Nouha Dicko on loan to Vitesse Arnhem has led McCann to explore the free agent market, including handing a trial to Hungarian striker Norbert Balogh.
Here’s everything Grant McCann had to say on the movement in and out of the KCOM Stadium.
Now the window has closed, where do we stand on Markus Henriksen and his future?
He’s part of the group like everyone else. For one reason or another a move away didn’t materialise and now Markus is here and part of us. Like everyone else he’ll fight and try and work to be a part of the group.
In your mind, why do you think he hasn’t moved?
There’s a lot of things that’s happened but it hasn’t materialised for one reason or another. I don’t want to delve too far into that but he’s here and part of the group.
Is there any disappointment on his part that he’s not got a move?
I don’t know. I’m focused on the football and what we’ve got in the building. The window is shut, Markus is here and that’s where we’re going.
Have you sat down with Markus since he came back from international duty?
And can you given an insight into what was said?
Exactly what I’ve just told you. He’s part of the group. You get your head down, you start working and you’re up against a very good midfield six, who have all contributed hugely in the eight games we’ve played.
I’ve been really pleased with them and now it’s down to him, not me.
Has he got to convince you he’s worth a place?
Of course. They all do. Every single one of them every day. Markus is no different. They all work ever so hard in training and that’s just the way we are.
You wouldn’t have any reservations calling upon him when needed?
I think I’ve answered the question. He’s part of the group like everyone else.
Does the same extend to David Milinkovic?
Yes. He’s got to be willing to work and fight, get past the ones in front of him.
Again there’s two players who have done very well for us in Bowen and Grosicki. We’ve got Josh Magennis and Josh Bowler who can play in those positions as well so David has got a fight on his hands. That’s the nature of football, you’ve got to fight and want to get a place in the group.
Nouha Dicko did move on, that was a move you were happy to sanction?
It was important that Nouha plays some games. He wasn’t happy to wait and get the chance.
I’m fine with that. I would never stand in someone’s way if that’s how they want it to be.
You want a group that’s committed to the cause. I’m not saying Nouha wasn’t but I understand that he didn’t play much last year and he didn’t want to go through another year where he wasn’t playing as much as he wanted. The move made sense for both parties.
Does it leave you looking at other attacking options in the free agent market?
Yes, we have been. We’ve looked at two or three free agents and we’re still looking.
Hopefully we can sit down, myself and my staff, and think which way is best for us to go, whether we do something now or we wait until January.
What’s the likelihood of you doing something now?
It’s 50-50 really. It’s whether we decide to do it or not. We’ll see.
We’re told Norbert Balogh has been training with you?
Norbert has been in and he’s been good. We’ve got a decision to make.
Another name that’s been mentioned is Gary Hooper, is there any interest in him?
There’s always going to be people putting two and two together and coming up with six. Hooper is a player that me and Cliff (Byrne) played with. We know what he’s about and that’s probably where the link has come from.
