The cost of your train commute is set to rise again – despite most passengers claiming rail fares are “awful” value for money. Rail fares are set to increase in January in line with inflation, which means rail companies will be able to charge you up to 2.8 per cent more for your ticket. Any changes have to be agreed by the Department for Transport, which regulates the fares. The Transport secretary has said the priority is to prioritising timeliness. It comes as the latest figures, released on August 14, show the Retail Price Index (RPI) was 2.8 per cent in July. The increase could see a significant jump in cost to rail passengers, particularly those using season tickets. For example, if you bought an annual season ticket from Reading to London Terminals today, it would cost you £4,604. However rise in inflation means that price could rise by £129 to £4,733 from January. An annual season ticket from Wokingham to London Terminals could go up from £3,932 to £4,042, while one from Bracknell to London Terminals could increase from £3,816 to £3,923. The cost of travel from Ascot to London Terminals could be set to rise by £105 to £3,845, with a potential rise of £86 to £3,154 for travelling from Windsor and Eton Riverside to London Terminals.
