Made a good smothering stop from Kovacic first half. Saved well from Abraham in extra time but then gifted a soft penalty to the same player, but then saved decisively from him in the shoot-out.
Joe Gomez 5
Switched to right-back, more minutes in the tank. Chelsea, though, consistently got through down his wing. Better second half, but seemed always on the edge. Moved to left-back in extra time.
Joel Matip 6
For 20 minutes was excellent with a succession of good tackles and timely interceptions, then completely lost his way. Better defensively second half but passing was at times all over the place.
Virgil van Dijk 7
Had an early battle with Giroud until the Chelsea man decided that was quite enough. Dealt with the Frenchman when he tried again second half. Missed good chance with a header from a corner.
Andy Robertson 5
Barely featured during the opening quarter until a great recovery to deny Pedro a chance. More prominent going forward as Liverpool responded but deliveries way below par. Subbed.
Always looked to dictate the play but his passing wasn’t always on point and at times guilty of ball-watching. Played part in equaliser and more controlled second half and extra time apart from some uncharacteristically wild sliding challenges.
James Milner 5
Effort couldn’t be faulted but the quality wasn’t consistently there. Not his best night. Subbed.
Jordan Henderson 6
Tried to make things happen while helping protect the stretched right flank. Couple of decent crosses and had a shot deflected through to Kepa, but will know can do more. Booked.
Mohamed Salah 7
Pace got him in behind Chelsea a few times in the first half, drawing a good save from Kepa with one chance. Always a threat even if the end product wasn’t always forthcoming.
Sadio Mane 7
Starting centrally, far more involved when returning to the left flank second half, and notched an opportunist equaliser before starting and finishing the move for the second.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 5
Started brightly and created Salah chance, but a peripheral figure for the rest of the first half before being replaced.
Roberto Firmino (for Oxlade-Chamberlain 46) 8
Instant impact with his assist for Mane’s equaliser and completely changed the dimension of Liverpool’s attack with his intelligent and accurate play. Then created another for the Senegalese. Excellent.

Gini Wijnaldum (for Milner 64) 6
Straight into the thick of it but not much real impact.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (for Robertson 90) 6
An unconvincing start to his cameo wasn’t helped by a later booking.
Divock Origi (for Mane 103) 6
