Actress and singer Dove Cameron has come under fire on social media after sharing two photos in which she wasn’t wearing a bra.
Yes, really. So much for free the nipple, huh?
The 23-year-old Descendants star was shamed by Instagram users who thought the pictures might be inappropriate for some of her younger followers.
However they seemed to miss the poignant point Cameron was making with her posts, which were captioned with feminist quotes about introducing feminism to a younger generation.
Alongside the snaps, which show Cameron posing in front of a mirror in a white top, she posted a passage from the book ‘Singing Woman: Voices of the Sacred Feminine’.
It reads: “Women HAVE a history that has been systematically suppressed. Our collective spirituality has largely been tainted to fit the needs of men and those in power. This has a profound effect on the self-esteem of girls and the women they become. This influence can be seen in their life choices, partners and financial security for the rest of their lives.
“It also has an effect on the way their future partners will view them – and ultimately treat them. Our girls deserve better. The time to introduce feminism and woman-centered spirituality to ALL children is now.
“This is the age of the ascendant Feminine Principle. In such times as these, women are able to look at themselves with new concepts of value and brilliance. However you inhabit and express being Woman, embrace yourself in that way today!”
Unfortunately, many people couldn’t get beyond the fact that Cameron, who regularly appears on the Disney Channel, wasn’t wearing a bra.
One person commented: “Not to be rude but there are kids that follow you and you have you nips out.”
Another said: “Honey, What are you posting? You’re a professional actress working with Disney, not a pinup girl.”
A third wrote: “You forgot to wear a bra sooo embarrassing.”
“Can u delete this,” asked a fourth user.
Someone else branded the photos “disgusting”.
They said: “Ok hate on me all you want, but feminism is the most unattractive thing. Put a bra on because little kids that follow you and are inspired by you do not need to see this. You’re a Disney star and acting like this?! Disgusting.”
Thankfully there were plenty of people willing to stick up for her and her right to do what she wants with her body.
“People, she can do whatever she wants,” proclaimed one supporter. “It’s her body, it’s her Instagram and it’s her life. I think that this picture is a great way to get the message through and I honestly hate wearing my bra, and I feel like I always have to wear it. This is very encouraging for me and it was a great idea. And if you say ‘tHeRe ArE kIdS fOlLoWiNg HeR’, kids shouldn’t be in Instagram. And if they are, Dove isn’t the parent. So why is she responsible for what the kid sees? That’s on the parents, not her.”
A second replied: “Men are allowed to walk around and wear no shirt and show their nipples but women get slut-shamed when they don’t wear a bra.”
“You all know what nipples are for right? Feeding babies. So get over yourselves. They’re not for men or sex, they’re for babies,” said a third.
Cameron also wasn’t going to stand by and put up with being body shamed.
Instead she insisted that she was being a “role model” by encouraging other women to embrace their bodies.
She added: “Take ur f***in bra off if you want. Don’t hide your natural body. People are weird, just because it’s ‘the norm’ now to be ashamed of your nipples or your female anatomy or your period doesn’t mean they are actually bad or embarrassing???
“Women’s bodies are the literal coolest. Anyone who tells you to hide it or slut shames you or puts you down because of your gender can f*** RIGHT off.”
