‘Toxic, disgusting and sick’ – just some of the words used to describe the paedophiles in Hull and East Yorkshire that have been jailed in 2019.
Their crimes against children are shocking and evil and they have rightly been placed behind bars where they belong.
The monstrous sex offenders on this list include a former police inspector who sexually abused a schoolgirl, a wig-wearing paedophile with 13 aliases, and a serial sex offender who lurked in public toilets waiting for boys.
Below you will see some of the faces of the 18 Hull and East Yorkshire paedophiles who have been locked up at Hull Crown Court so far this year and the sentences they received.
John Baker – The wig-wearing paedo with 14 names
A dangerous paedophile admitted he would have raped an eight-year-old girl if he had not been interrupted by a school caretaker.
John Baker, 41, who has 13 aliases and wore a wig for his appearance at Hull Crown Court on February 7, was jailed for five years in 1998 for indecently assaulting the girl after taking her off a school premises in Bradford.
The self-employed removals firm boss was made subject to a sexual harm prevention order indefinitely, which included a prohibition on him using the internet at home. But after Baker’s lodger reported him for accessing the web at home, he admitted doing so in the early hours while his partner was asleep.
Police found 363 images at category A – the most serious – 235 at category B, and 342 at category C. There were also 16 prohibited images, although no detail was given of what these were.
The latest cases in the courts
Baker told the probation service one image was of an eight-month old baby, but it was not clear if this related to earlier offences.
Claire Holmes, prosecuting, said Baker had used a website which “showed images from all over the world of people of all ages having sex. He saw adults but also saw a number of child sites where he saw young children performing sexual acts.”
Baker admitted “getting excited” but denied getting sexual gratification from the images. He continued viewing them because they continued to excite him, he said.
Baker claimed he had been doing this for three to four months, but Miss Holmes said evidence suggested it had gone on longer. Baker also admitted using computer programmes to conceal his internet usage.
Watch: The criminals locked up in Hull in May
Other names used by Baker included “Sam Turner”. On January 14 last year, Baker, accompanied by his partner, gave his name as Sam Turner when visiting another sex offender in Hull Prison.
He also failed to give details of his other names when attending Osborne Street police station in November 17, 2017, to complete the sex offender registration form.
Baker, of De Grey Street, west Hull, admitted three offences of making indecent photographs, possessing a prohibited image, breaching a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO), and failing to comply with his notification requirements as a sex offender. He said he kept changing his name to protect his removals business, which was launched eight years ago.
His 62 previous offences included the indecent assault, possessing indecent photographs and pseudo photographs, and failing to comply with notification requirements.
Describing the circumstances of the assault on the eight-year-old, Judge Mark Bury said: “You had entered a school premises and you led her away. You were to admit to the probation service that had you not been interrupted by the caretaker you would have raped her.”
Jailing Baker for five years, the judge told him: “I have no doubt at all that you are indeed a dangerous offender and that an extended sentence is warranted.” Baker looked shocked at the length of his sentence and silently mouthed “What?” He said “Love you” to a woman in the public gallery, who began sobbing.
He must serve at least two-thirds of the five years before he can apply for parole, and will be on licence for at least three years on release.

Matthew Thomson – Scout leader who ‘chatted to boy, 14, for sex’
Matthew Thomson, 36, of Littleham Close, Bransholme, was caught by paedophile hunters attempting to meet a “14-year-old boy” for sex.
Thomson pleaded guilty to searching for indecent images of young boys on the internet, as well as grooming what he thought was a 14-year-old named David on homosexual dating app Grindr.
However, “David” was actually a fake profile created by paedophile hunting group Keeping Our Kids Safe.
Thomson realised the profile of “David” was actually fake and so contacted Keeping Our Kids Safe, who then issued an ultimatum telling him to hand himself over to the police or they would release his personal details on their Facebook page.
Thomson – a Beaver Master in charge of young Scouts between the ages of six and eight – met the paedophile hunting group in May last year and they filmed him outside Clough Road PoliceStation before he handed himself in.
WATCH: Matthew Thomson caught out by a vigilante group
In the video, he admits saying to “David”, after finding out that he was 14, that they could start with “kissing and touching” before going onto a sexual act.
After a police interview, Thomson’s personal computer was recovered and was found to have seven indecent images of Category B, and 16 images in Category C.
During forensic examination of Thomson’s computer, it was found he had searched terms of indecent images including those of “young gay boys,” “very, very, very young boys”, and worryingly, “Scouts”.
Judge Thomas described Thomson as a “lonely, pathetic individual” and sentenced him to 12 months in jail as well as a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.
Bryan Calam – Former police inspector who sexually abused schoolgirl
Disgraced former police inspector Bryan Calam was jailed for five years after being convicted by a jury of repeatedly sexually abusing a “particularly vulnerable” schoolgirl more than 15 years ago.
Calam – who later worked for Hull City and Hull FC, and was chairman of Hessle Golf Club – had denied any wrongdoing and dismissed the victim’s account as “absolute rubbish”.
But a jury of seven women and five men took just an hour and 40 minutes to find him guilty of all charges he faced – five offences of indecent assault and three of indecency with a child – after a five-day trial at Hull Crown Court .
The court had sat in silence as Claire Holmes, prosecuting, read the victim’s statement to the court before sentencing.
The victim said: “I remember the first time he had sex with me quite clearly, and now it makes me physically sick. This was a man [in his 50s] wanting to have sex with a child. I knew this experience wasn’t normal as none of my friends were talking about similar experiences.”
She said Calam had warned her not to tell anyone about the abuse as it “would kill his wife and he worshipped the ground she walked on”.
She said: “He took away the chance of me experiencing the normal way of growing up and losing my virginity [with someone her age].”
The victim said she has had 33 counselling sessions to try to cope with the abuse, which at first she did with “no support because I was ashamed of telling people”.
She also revealed she had been diagnosed with an illness triggered by stress, which she believed was a direct result of Calam’s abuse.
The court heard during the trial that when the victim told Calam to stop the abuse, he “begged for one more time and said he might have to go to a prostitute”.
As well as sexually touching the girl over and under her clothing, Calam had her perform a sex act on him while he was driving on a motorway in his Jaguar, performed sex acts on her, and had sex with her in a garden, in a caravan, and before he played golf.
Sentencing Calam after the verdicts were delivered on Friday, trial judge Recorder Christopher Knox told him: “It has to be a substantial sentence of imprisonment. You know that and I know that.
“You will suffer very considerably at your age and with your antecedents [police background] in prison.”
Christopher Jones – Paedo who lurked in public toilets for boys added child on Facebook
Serial sex offender Christopher Jones was jailed after he spoke to an 11-year-old boy in a café and attempted to video call him on Facebook.
The boy was enjoying a day with his mum at the café in November 2018 and took a seat next to Jones and a woman where several conversations took place.
A hearing at Hull Crown Court heard after attending a Christmas party at the centre in December, the boy’s mum realised a Facebook account under Jones’ name had requested her son to join an online game of Cluedo, waved at him, and attempted to video call him.
Jones’ Sexual Harm Prevention Order was issued in 2009 and extended in August 2012 indefinitely after he was caught waiting in a public toilet for young boys.
The order prevents him from having “any contact in the community by any means what so ever with any person, a child under the age of 16 except in exceptional circumstances.”
Following the Facebook activity, the mum of the young boy grew concerned and at another trip to the café, noticed that from another table Jones was looking at her son “almost constantly”.
Her friend also noted the man staring at the young boy and reported it to a member of staff, who told her Jones was a resident at William Booth House.
The mother then informed police, who were able to see where Jones was at the dates and times of their meetings through a “buddy tag” he had to wear as part of his probation.
After being questioned following his arrest in February this year, Jones said he had been in contact with the 11-year-old six times and said that the pair had chatted about things including Star Wars, Hull KR , and what the boy was getting for Christmas.
Recorder Taryn Hunter described Jones’ history and current breach of the Sexual Harm Prevention Order as “more than troubling” as she sentenced him to two years in jail.
Oliver Garrity – ‘Toxic’ man ignores police warnings to stay away from girl
A man who was told to stay away from a teenage girl by police was jailed after ignoring their warning.
Oliver Garrity, 22, admitted having sexual activity with a child on the first day of his trial at Hull Crown Court .
The victim, described as “vulnerable”, was not yet 16 and was at risk of neglect and sexual exploitation at the time the offences took place.
She described Garrity, of Round Street, Bradford, as “toxic” and said he would message her calling her a “s***”, “fat” and a “wh***.”
Prosecuting, Kitty Colley said: “She was identified as a vulnerable child by social services and the police. She was reported by social workers to have low self-esteem and at risk of being exploited and they were involved providing support.”
After his arrest, Garrity then sent the girl abusive text messages. In a victim impact statement read out to the court , the girl said she realised there had been a “decline of her own self-worth”.
Sentencing Garrity to 21 months in jail, Judge Mark Bury told Garrity: “She was a particularly vulnerable young girl and was identified as a vulnerable child at high risk of sexual exploitation with no self-esteem and a history of self-harm and had searched before coming across you anyone for affection.
“In her eyes, she was desperate for affection at the time and she was used for sexual gratification by you, which has affected her already low self-esteem.
“Your personal attitude isn’t one that suggests remorse and on your part, you are still in denial and it is still more about the outcome for you than her.
“I have been urged to suspend your sentence but have come to the decision that this society has a duty to protect vulnerable young girls from themselves sometimes and that is the position here.”
Garrity must sign the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.
Terry Coneyworth – Raped girl, 2, in sick and depraved child sex crimes
An “abhorrent” child rapist has been jailed for life after raping a two-year-old girl and posting images of the vile abuse online.
Terry Coneyworth , 31, will serve at least eight years behind bars before he can apply for parole after he raped and sexually abused the toddler and posted images of the sick act on the internet.
Detectives had found images of child abuse on a website which led them to Coneyworth, of Derwent Avenue, west Hull.
More images and footage of abuse were found when officers seized Coneyworth’s mobile phone and iPad.
Coneyworth had spoken with a paedophile in the US over an online messaging service and the pair discussed their desire to sexually abuse and rape young children and babies. He told the sex offender that he was planning to also rape a baby boy.
Coneyworth of Derwent Avenue, east Hull, admitted a total of 19 sexual offences charges in December after one police officer described the offences as “the most serious and disturbing case I have dealt with in my 16 years of service”.
Humberside Police dectives discovered the sick images on his electronic devices in a raid on his home, but also found evidence of an online chat where Coneyworth talked about raping and sexually assaulting young children and babies.
Coneyworth, who sat in the dock with his head bowed and his tattooed hand over his mouth throughout the hearing, was found to have written letters which were seized from his bedroom on November 21, 2018.
Prosecutor Geraldine Kelly said: “He talked about being in a dark place, full of hate and ashamed of himself.
“To his family, he apologised and said that he has tried for many years to quit and be ‘normal’ but would revert to committing these offences.”
Gasps from the public gallery could be heard when Coneyworth was told he must serve a minimum of eight years in prison before he can apply for parole. He will be on licence for life.

Marco Assonga – ‘Disgusting’ paedo with foot fetish
A “disgusting” paedophile with a “foot fetish” filmed himself sexually assaulting a young girl.
Marco Assogna, 44, also took pictures of an intimate part of his body “on her feet” and created a dedicated file on his computer to store them in.
The pervert also allowed indecent images on his computer to be accessed by other paedophiles. He now faces deportation to his native Italy after being jailed for nine years for child sex offences.
Nicola Quinney, prosecuting, told Hull Crown Court police raided Assogna’s home last year after his IP address featured in an investigation of users of “peer to peer platform sharing of indecent images”.
Assogna, of HMP Hull, admitted five sexual assaults of a child under 13, five offences of making indecent photographs, and 27 of either possessing, making, or distributing indecent photographs.
“The UK Borders Act applies to him, doesn’t it?” Judge Mark Bury said. “He’s an Italian national. Automatic deportation provisions apply.
“If the Home Office have got anything about them they will use them, and I’d like that passed on to the appropriate authorities.”
Richard Thompson, mitigating, said: “The defendant accepts that there has to be a significant custodial sentence for these offences. He has discussed them with the author of the pre-sentence report.
“That has not been a straightforward process for him. He has perhaps expressed himself better in the letter he’s written.”
Assogna would not challenge deportation, Mr Thompson said, and planned to return to his family in Italy.
Jailing Assogna for nine years, Judge Bury told him: “It’s clear you obtained sexual gratification from this tawdry behaviour. You are , in my view, a disgusting individual. I would approve of a Home Office decision to deport you at the end of this sentence.”

Robert Smith – Predator who abused schoolgirl after grooming her with McDonald’s and cinema trip
A vulnerable schoolgirl was groomed by an online predator, who took her to the cinema and McDonalds before having sex with her in a hotel and a derelict Hull landmark.
Married supermarket manager Robert Smith, 34, travelled from Halifax to repeatedly sexually exploit the teenager, which included taking indecent photographs of her.
He was jailed for four years and eight months on Monday after being snared when police were able to trace him through hotel records.
Hull Crown Court heard Smith – who had just become a father for the first time – began chatting to the victim on social media after she posted on the website Omegle: “I’m a bored [age]. Message me.”
Richard Thompson, prosecuting, said: “She made clear she was just [age]. She was to tell the police when spoken to that she knew he was 33. She was aware he was married with a child and worked at Lidl or Aldi.”
Smith, of Bentley Avenue, Halifax, was arrested three days later. When the girl was spoken to, she confirmed they had been having sex, and also that Smith had “slapped” part of her body with her permission, which had left marks that were visible “for a number of hours”.
Latest inquests in Hull
Police were to make other disturbing discoveries when they seized Smith’s mobile phones. In total they contained 37 indecent images of children as young as five at category A – the most serious – 31 at category B, and 47 category C images.
Officers also found 242 “extreme pornographic images” and films on a memory card, which were largely of women having sex with dogs. Smith had also been chatting about beastiality with “particular types of dogs”, the court heard.
Michael Greenhalgh, mitigating, said: “There’s no excuse for the behaviour which Mr Smith was involved in. He accepts that and he understands, given where this case is in the sentencing guidelines, he will be made subject to a custodial sentence this morning.”
As well as jailing Smith, Judge Paul Watson QC, Honorary Recorder of Hull and the East Riding, made him subject to a sexual harm prevention order for ten years. He must register as a sex offender for life.

Jonathan Horne – Sick paedophile raped girl, 15, and sexually attacked child, 10
Jonathan Horne, 47, was sentenced to 18 years for raping a teenage girl and sexually assaulting a child.
Following a six day trial, a jury found him guilty of ten charges including rape, sexual activity with a child under 13 and indecent assault.
The court heard the shocking crimes took place when Horne was living in Withernsea. He was interviewed by police years later after his victims confronted him and secretly recorded the encounter.
The court heard how Horne groomed and abused one of his victims, then aged 14, before raping her a year later.
On one occasion, when the girl was 15 and had been drinking, she woke to find Horne raping her.
Years later, he then sexually abused a ten-year-old girl, only for his victim to be branded an “attention seeker” and a “liar” for speaking out against him.
Watch: How are offenders sentenced?
Both victims said they have suffered suicidal thoughts due to the abuse carried out on them by Horne.
The first victim said: “I feel like I don’t have a place in this world. This has been so much pressure because I don’t know who I am anymore. It has been torture.”
They are now looking forward to rebuilding their lives knowing their attacker is finally behind bars.
Horne will serve half of his 18 years in custody and half on licence and will have to sign a sexual harm prevention order and the sexual offenders register.

Jason Hoodlass – Paedo caught by Cash Converters
Jason Hoodlass, 23, was caught out when he tried to pawn his mobile phone at Cash Converters in King Edward Street for a £20 loan, on May 16, 2017.
A horrified member of staff called police after discovering the sick images, which included a picture involving a three-year-old child and another image of a person having sex with a dog.
When interviewed by police, Hoodlass claimed he had just bought the phone from a man called “John” on Gumtree and took it straight to the shop to trade it in.
He continued to deny the allegations but a Hull Crown Court jury found him guilty of three offences of possessing indecent photographs of children, and one of possessing an extreme pornographic image – a person having sex with an animal – on Wednesday, April 3.
He returned to the dock on Friday, May 10, to be sentenced for the offences he still claimed had “nothing to do with him”.
Judge Bury said: “You pleaded the phone was not yours and you had just paid for it for a small amount of money and that you were hoping to make a quick profit. Your account was bogus.
“Your pre-sentence report shows you continue to deny this offence. This is the second time you fall to be sentenced and you are only 23.”
In total, police found one category A image, five category B images and 42 category C images, on his Alcatel phone as well as one image of extreme pornography.
Hoodlass was sentenced to two years in prison. He will also be subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the next ten years.

David Pritchard – ‘Depraved Hull monster’ preyed on boys for sick sexual fantasies
A depraved predatory “monster” who sexually abused three vulnerable teenage boys has been jailed.
David Pritchard, 61, has been jailed for 12 years and has been given an extended licence period of six years for his crimes.
So disgusting were his offences that a judge said he had “behaved like a monster”. Meanwhile, a Detective Constable has branded him an “extremely dangerous predatory paedophile” and said he fears officers have only “scratched the surface” of the true extent of his crimes.
The force is urging anyone who has fallen victim to “such foul and perverted behaviour” to come forward.
Pritchard had pleaded guilty to 25 counts over three separate indictments against three teenage boys – all of which were under the age of 16 at the time of the abuse.
The course of the abuse started in Derby in 1990 against a vulnerable young boy who had run away from home.
After being plied with drink and cannabis, he was abused up until he was 18 by Pritchard – who managed to keep him quiet by threatening to kill his mum.
The boy was too scared to report the abuse until he confided in a probation officer after he was arrested for minor crimes himself in 2018.
Prosecuting, Charlotte Baines said Pritchard had subjected the boy to horrific sexual abuse and incited him to engage in a number of sexual activities with him.
A second and third boy were also sexually abused by Pritchard while he was living in Wellstead Street, off Hessle Road in Hull, and Pinfold Street in Bridlington between 2014 and 2018 when they were under the age of 16.
Pritchard already had similar convictions and served a five year sentence in 1989 for a serious sexual offence.
The court heard that during his interviews with police, Pritchard admitted he had a “sexual interest in pre-pubescent males.” He also told cops that he was “glad it had all come out so they could get it sorted.”
Sentencing him, Recorder Gurdial Singh told Pritchard that he had “behaved like a monster” and told him the lack of physical violence in the abuse (whereby he had instead used coercion and grooming) meant he had narrowly avoided a life sentence.
However, Recorder Singh slammed him with a custodial sentence of which he must serve at least two thirds of before being released on an extended licence period of six years.
Recorder Singh imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order on Pritchard until further notice and ordered him to sign the Sexual Offenders Register, which he must be on for the rest of his life.

Steven Clarke – Ex-rugby international bribed girls with drugs in exchange for sex
A former junior international rugby player has been jailed for four years for grooming three young girls by offering them free drugs, and sexually assaulting one while she was too drunk to remember.
Steven Clarke, 21, offered the young teenagers free cocaine in exchange for “sexual favours”, Hull Crown Court heard.
He then put his hands down the top of the youngest while she was “out of her head” on alcohol, also leaving “love bites” on her neck, which a friend took pictures of.
She has since been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health issues, and said Clarke “ruined my life”.
Michael Dunne, prosecuting, said after Clarke met one of the girls he sent her a message saying she was “beautiful” and he “wanted to be friends”. She was with Clarke when he bought seven bags of cocaine.
Clarke offered that victim cocaine on at least 15 occasions, but she only took it once, Mr Dunne said. He offered cocaine to another girl ten times, and she took it twice.
Clarke seemed to “want to impress” the girls with his drug use, arranging lines of cocaine on the screen of his mobile phone, which he “sniffed” through a rolled-up £5 note.
Mr Dunne said Clarke asked two of the girls for a “threesome” and would “say things like, ‘I think I deserve sex’.”
Clarke, formerly of Rise Close, Long Riston , admitted three offences of offering to supply a class A drug, and one of sexual activity with a child on the day he was due to stand trial earlier this month. He had one previous conviction for driving while unfit through drugs.
The sexual assault victim said of his late plea: “I don’t believe he’s sorry at all. I believe all he thinks about is himself and what he wants.”
David Godfrey, mitigating, said Clarke had “represented the nation” at under-18s rugby, and “on the face of it, he was a young man who had a wealth of opportunities in front of him”.
Jailing Clarke for four years, the judge said the girls were “impressionable” and he “effectively groomed them”.
He told him: “Your motive was not the cynically based motive of financial gain, it is clear from the circumstances that you were offering these girls free cocaine in exchange for sexual favours. I find you have no real mitigation in terms of your remorse.”
Clarke must register as a sex offender for seven years, and was made subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same period.

Kevin Roe – Sick child rapist gets long jail term as hideous lies exposed
A former council worker has been jailed after a jury found him guilty of raping a girl when she was 13 years old.
Kevin Roe, 63, had denied two offences of rape, two charges of serious sexual assault and two sexual assaults on the same under-age girl.
But a jury at Hull Crown Court unanimously found him guilty of all charges after deliberating for just over three hours.
During the trial, the court heard his assaults started when the girl was just 11 years old.
He raped the youngster on at least four occasions when she was 13 and 14, having unprotected sex with her.
Rose, of Vale Crescent, Bishop Wilton, near Pocklington , breathed deeply and closed his eyes when the verdicts were announced.
Jailing him for 12-and-a-half years, Judge David Tremberg told him: “You subjected the complainant to a series of humiliations and degradations.
“You knew what you were doing was seriously wrong but you were unable to stop yourself doing it over and over again.
“You are still in complete denial even in the teeth of compelling evidence against you.”
The judge praised the courage of his victim to give evidence in court.
He said: “What is clear from the level of distress shown during her evidence is that the legacy of this abuse was and continues to be deep-seated and enduring.
“What you (Roe) have done to her has infected her life and it continues to cast a shadow over her life.
“Some victims of abuse quite understandably never find it possible to move on from their experience. It is hoped she is not one of them.”
In a victim impact statement, the girl said she experienced flashbacks about the abuse, could not sleep and felt socially isolated as a result.
Roe, who worked as a council highways technician for 23 years, claimed during the trial he was impotent and unable to have sex .
He also said a series of sexual social media messages sent by him to the girl as innocent texts, claiming some of their sexual content was the result of predictive text mistakes.
But a jury dismissed his excuses and lies and found him guilty.
The police were first alerted to his crimes in 2017 when a relative of the girl witnessed “inappropriate behaviour” by Roe, who had been rubbing her legs.
Before working for Humberside County Council for 23 years, Roe served for eight years with the Prince of Wales Own Regiment. More recently he worked as a steward at Beverley Rugby Club and for UK Mail in Pocklington.
Passing sentence, Judge Tremberg said: “Clearly only an immediate custodial sentence is appropriate in this case.”
