It seems the famous Coronation Street cobbles are getting more deserted by the day as the eighth star to quit this year has been confirmed.
Beverley Callard has become the latest star to announce her bombshell departure from the hit soap.
The actress, who has played Liz McDonald for 30 years, follows Lucy Fallon, Katie McGlynn and Faye Brooks who all announced their exits within days of each other earlier this year.
The three departures in three days brought the grand total of major characters fleeing the street this year to seven, and now with Beverley, eight, – plunging the soap into chaos.
We take a look at all the stars who are walking off into the sunset and their reasons for leaving.
Lucy Fallon – Bethany Platt
The Bethany Platt actress stunned fans with news of her departure after four years on the cobbles.
Lucy, 25, has had her fair share of screen time and accolades including her much-commended part in the dark grooming storyline of 2017.
There have been reports that the Corrie cast have not been happy since Kate Oates left in 2018 and have complained about sinister storylines, scheduling issues and a heavy workload.
But Lucy took to Twitter to put to bed speculation and reveal the real reason behind her decision.
She said: “Just to clarify, my decision to leave was made in August last year and has nothing to do with ANYONE at Coronation Street .
“I didn’t make it lightly and I am going to miss every single person there. Excited for my final year at the best place! Woo”
Lucy will be leaving at the end of her contract in 2020 so still has plenty of time left on screen.
The actress, who won Best Dramatic Female Performance at last year’s Soap Awards, put a statement on Twitter confirming her exit.
She said: “After the most incredible 4 years, I have made the extremely difficult decision to leave Coronation Street at the end of my contract in 2020.
“It’s hard to put into words how much this show means to me.
“I’ve made lifelong friends with some of the most talented and hardworking people in the industry, I’ve had some terrific and immensely important storylines and I’ve laughed with the best people everyday.”
Katie McGlynn – Sinead Tinker
Katie became the sixth star to quit the cobbles in three months, according to reports.
The decision is sure to have come as a huge blow to Corrie bosses as her character, Sinead Tinker, is currently at the centre of major storylines.
According to insiders, Katie will apparently ‘need replacing urgently’ as Sinead – who is currently battling cervical cancer.
A spokesperson confirmed the story still has ‘a long way to go.’
Speaking to The Sunday Post , Katie previously admitted that she was unsure about her character’s fate but she was open to trying something new.
She said: “With the nature of my storyline, I guess it’s 50/50. Either way I’d be happy, though.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time on the Street and it’d be amazing if I got to stay as it is like a family here. But at the same time, as an actor, I’d love to go out there and see what there is. I like doing different things and it’d be exciting to see if I could play a different character again.”
Faye Brookes – Kate Connor
Faye broke the news on Twitter that she was leaving Wetherfield and her role as Kate Connor after four years.
The actress, who is engaged to Gareth Gates, said in a statement that she wanted to ‘explore new opportunities.’
She tweeted: “Thanks to everyone for your amazing support, but after 4 fabulous years in Weatherfield it’s time for me to explore new opportunities, I’ve loved playing Kate Connor, but she needs a break for a little while and so with a song in my heart I’m off to pastures new. #corrie.”
Faye’s sudden announcement came as a surprise to many fans considering her very recent comments that she was “not done” with her character.
In an interview with OK! Magazine on April 1, Faye insisted that she was “not going anywhere” and that there were more storylines she wanted to “sink her teeth into”.
A Coronation Stree spokesperson said: “Faye is a very talented actress who has put her all into the portrayal of Kate Connor for the past three and a half years, we wish her every success for the future.
“She will be on screen until early autumn and the door will be left open.”
Tristan Gemmill – Robert Preston
A week before Faye ‘s departure was confirmed, Tristan – who plays Robert Preston – announced he was leaving the cobbles.
After four years on the street, the Australian actor broke the sad news to fans on social media claiming he was looking out for his next adventure.
“Folks, I just wanted to let you know that the time has come for me to hang up the chef’s gear and head for pastures new.
“There is still a lot of drama & shenanigans to come for Robert but I will be leaving Corrie later in the year.”
Tristan, 51, took over the role of Robert in 2015 from original actor Julian Kay.
Connie Hyde – Gina Seddon
In March, Connie, who starred as Sally Webster’s sister Gina Seddon, revealed her time on the show is coming to an end.
Underworld machinist Gina has been a Corrie regular since March 2017, and is best known for constantly bickering with sister Sally.
Gina was one of the victims of the factory collapse. She recovered from her injuries and walked away from the cobbles – just after making up with Sally.
Actress Connie took over the role after Julie Foy originally played Gina in 1988-1989.
Kym Marsh – Michelle Connor
Corrie favourite Kym announced in February that she was leaving the soap after 13 years of playing barmaid Michelle Connor.
Kym said that she was leaving to try her hand at other projects and for one other very sweet reason.
The former Hear Say singer said she couldn’t wait to become a grandmother at 42 as her daughter daughter Emilie revealed her pregnancy.
Kym said she wanted to spend more quality time with her family.
She told OK! magazine : “[A] big factor in my decision to take a break from Corrie is the impending arrival of my grandson. I’m looking forward to having more time to spend with him and Emilie after he’s born this summer.”
But that’s not all Kym is hoping will occupy her time.
She said: “Other actresses from the show have gone on to do other incredible acting work, so who knows! It’s scary but I’m also really excited about what the future holds.”
Kym was also quick to dismiss any rumours she would be cropping on any reality TV shows in the future.
She said: ” There were reports that I was going to appear in the next series of Strictly or I’m A Celeb… As wonderful as those shows are, I’m not leaving Corrie after thirteen years to do reality TV.”
Bhavna Limbachia – Rana Habeeb
In January, Bhavna Limbachia confirmed that she was leaving and that her character Rana Habeeb would be killed off in heartbreaking scenes.
The nurse, played by Bhavna since 2016, died on her wedding day to Kate Connor.
Viewers were left in tears as Bhavna perished in Kate’s arms in the factory collapse.
The move had caused outrage among LGBT+ groups as it denied fans the chance to witness the soap’s first ever gay marriage.
Speaking on This Morning, Bhavna insisted it was her decision to kill her character off and said it was done with “integrity”.
She said: “My decision to leave and be killed of wasn’t meant to offend the LGBT+ community.
“It was done with the same way I’ve tried to portray the character throughout the years with truth and integrity.
“The decision was about two people being in love and pure regardless of age, sexuality and religion.
“The intention was never to offend the LGBT+ community. It was a modern day Romeo and Juliet.”
Brooke Vincent – Sophie Webster
Brooke recently welcomed baby Mexx with footballer Jean Bryan, so the actress is on maternity leave.
So even though she’ll be absent from the soap for a little while, this won’t be the last we see of Sophie.
Shona Ramsay – Julia Goulding
David Platt’s put-upon fiance is officially on maternity leave as she awaits the arrival of her first child.
The actress has already reassured fans she won’t be gone for long and will definitely be back having recently signed a new contract to keep her character on the cobbles for another year.
Julia’s character Shona has had an incredibly tough year thus far, what with fiancé David ending up behind bars and as soon as he was released, the duo married.
Julia’s departure is set to air on screens this week.
Beverley Callard – Liz McDonald
Beverley Callard has confirmed she is leaving the ITV soap having appeared as her character Liz McDonald over the past 30 years.
An exit has been announced for the character with her set to leave Weatherfield “with a bang”.
The character is the mother of fellow Corrie resident Steve McDonald, with her granddaughter Amy also on the Cobbles.
Now, speaking to OK! magazine soap favourite Beverley has announced she will depart from the show next year, with a huge storyline lined up for her.
She told bosses of her plans earlier this month, while her final scenes will air in 2020.
Beverley, who first appeared on the soap in 1989, will soon go on tour with the comedy The Thunder Girls.
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
