MINISTER FOR HIGHER EDUCATION PILA NININGI SAID YESTERDAY THE WITHDRAWAL OF TARI-PORI MP JAMES MARAPE AS NOMINEE FOR PRIME MINISTER IN THE OPPOSITION, WAS AN ACT OF UTMOST DISRESPECT FOR THE YOUNG LEADER AND THE PEOPLE.
“personally, I was happy that the opposition had seen potential in Marape’s leadership,” he said. “I thought if Prime Minister Peter O’Neill was not going to muster the numbers, at least another leader from the SHP/Hela region was going to get the top job.
“however, I am now utterly disappointed that he has been advised, coaxed or forced to withdraw. It seems the initial bait and lure was a total lie.”
he said the opposition has been on a “fishing expedition” for some time, and when they finally caught one of our promising leaders, they leave him gasping and wanting; not to mention the insult to the people of SHP/Hela. What a total slander. How is anyone now going to trust the opposition?
he said the prime minister’s position is created by the Constitution of the country. It is for the best leader, among elected members of parliament, to lead the country and represent it on the global arena.
“we have set processes and procedures that define how the PM position is created by law.
the PM role is not a commodity to be offloaded nor used as a bait to trap the highest bidder.
by our lawful process and procedures, our people directly mandate representatives with a majority to govern and the party leader becomes the prime minister.
it is a sad day for politics in PNG that the position of prime minister is being reduced to a bait by the opposition. Are they now suggesting they don’t have a credible leader among them to be prime minister?
“i have always maintained that Prime Minister O’Neill will not live forever, and time will come when the leadership baton will have to be transferred. It is incumbent on all of us MPs to earn such a role rather than wrestle it off. Here I am not talking about myself, I have had to wait 35 years before I got elected.
“but as an elder SHP/Hela citizen and MP, I was hoping my younger colleagues such as Mr Marape,
philip Undialu, William Powi and others within the PNC party would have earned the trust of some of us to formally and duly support one of them to take us into the next elections, seek the mandate from the people and take us forward.
“sadly, we have now conveniently landed ourselves into the hands of the opposition’s game plan and are left gasping! We now have only ourselves to blame.
our fathers and their fathers have been building other provinces’ economies and societies since the turn of the last century. Consequently, God has rewarded us with critical resources strategically located in SHP and Hela and to cap it all off, blessed us with the ultimate leadership role on the land.
why should we now leave all this behind and retract our father’s footsteps and be undermined all over again?” he said.
mr Niningi said to contest for the prime minister’s position or to pass legislations on the floor of parliament, it is a numbers game.
he urged the opposition to present their numbers now and pursue that through that defined process.
“do not bastardise the position of prime minister and in the process insult the dignity of young and promising leaders by trading them off against each other.
“finally, to my SHP/Hela leaders, we have a very long journey ahead of us. Our provinces are the very last frontiers for any type of development, and we can progressively move forward only when we respect and work with each other with humility.
“we have waited for far too long. When we cannot respect our own brothers than we cannot expect that to be reciprocated.
as we say in our area, the enemy comes only to destroy that cohesion when we allow it the space to do so.
you have made your statements and positions well known. Eventually whatever you choose to do is totally up to you.
my concern is that wherever you are, ensure your leaderships, which have been mandated to you by our SHP/Hela people, must be respected by others, as many of us your brothers do.
to the opposition members please do not disrespect our people’s mandate.”
