CD Projekt’s RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 release date is rumored to be right around the corner so what better time to talk about the game? CD Projekt RED first new IP since The Witcher is shaping up to be something incredible. Let’s start from the beginning so even those who don’t yet know about Cyberpunk 2077 can get up to speed.
Cyberpunk 2077 is an action role-playing game developed by CD Projekt RED. The Polish Studio has experience working with PlayStation, Xbox, and PC thanks to the highly popular Witcher games. After The Witcher 3 entered post-production, CD Projekt RED re-routed its resources to a brand new video games IP.
Well, technically it’s not a brand new IP but it is being adapted to a AAA video game for the first time. And there is no one better than CD Projekt RED to handle the game’s development. The new Cyberpunk game is adapted from the 1988 tabletop game Cyberpunk 2020. It is set 50-years after (there is timeline confusion we will discuss in just a bit) the events of the tabletop game. Cyberpunk 2077 takes us to the dystopian Night City in the heart of California U.S.A. Cyberpunk 2077 is an open world game and its map consists of 6 different districts.
Players will assume the role of a fully customizable character. People of Night City know him/her as V who is a mercenary.
Cyberpunk 2077 is developed on CD Projekt RED’s internal game engine, REDengine 4. Over 400 developers are currently working on the sci-fi game. So to sum up basic information about Cyberpunk 2077, here’s what we have.
- Developers — CD Projekt RED
- Publisher — CD Projekt RED
- Genre — RPG
- Engine — REDengine 4
- Platforms — Consoles and PC (May release on next-generation consoles)
Cyberpunk 2077 Release Date, Rumors, E3 2019, News, Gameplay, Concept Art, Leaks, And More
As mentioned above Cyberpunk 2077 is set 50-years after the tabletop game but there is confusion over what changes have been made to the timeline. Not too long ago the tabletop game creator Mike Pondsmith stated that there are some timeline changes to Cyberpunk 2077.
Let’s say that at this point, we plan to continue the timeline and you will see the things that you saw in 2020, but they will somewhat be changed. And that will affect both the timeline and also the fact that cellphones went from the size of the brick to the size your thump, and then again to the size of a brick. So you are going to see some shifts in technology.
Mike Pondsmith recently took to Reddit to confirm that Cyberpunk 2077 timeline isn’t changed and the game is set in the same timeline. However, this created even more confusion since CD Projekt RED itself called it a parallel timeline. In a video released a few months ago, CDPR stated that the game is set 50-years after the events of Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop RPG and is a parallel timeline.
Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t only set 50-years after the source material but it also takes place in a parallel timeline. This gave the team the freedom to create a game that respected and referenced the source material but also suited the shift to the video game medium.
There seems to be a lack of communication between CDPR and Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith. While we still do need a bit more clarification regarding the Cyberpunk 2077 timeline, we have no choice but to go with the latest news coming from Mike Pondsmith. Hence, Cyberpunk 2077 is not set in a parallel timeline (*wink* *wink*).
Cyberpunk 2077 Gameplay — Classes, Abilities, Combat, Open World
People who are fans of the Witcher series and any RPG games, in general, will have an amazing time with Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay. This is because CD Projekt Red has put it all into making sure the game surpasses even The Witcher 3. What kind of gameplay can we expect from the upcoming futuristic game?
Cyberpunk 2077 Open World — First off we’ll start with the basics. Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world Role-playing game which is played from a first-person perspective. The world you’ll be exploring is known as Night City. It’s a futuristic high tech urban environment full of activity. One interesting detail CD Projekt Red gave us is that nothing in Cyberpunk 2077 is procedurally generated.
This means you won’t see any random stock civilians crafted by the game’s AI to be doing a random task. The fact that nearly everything we’ll see is basically handcrafted is self-explanatory as to why the game has been in development for so long. The world of Cyberpunk 2077 was described to be very vertical as well. Players will be entering buildings and structures often to explore multiple floors in towers, skyscrapers, and apartment buildings. Comparatively, The Witcher 3’s world was mostly flat and stretched out over the wilderness and rural environments.
Vehicular travel will be available as well. Being on foot isn’t the only way to commute. We might also be able to use air travel although that hasn’t been confirmed as of yet. A majority of playtime may be spent indoors or in slums where vehicles won’t be available. Whether we’ll have any scenic areas or routes like beaches are also unknown.
‘What we do know is that Night City is categorized into 6 regions that players will be able to explore. These regions are the corporate City Center, immigrant-inhabited Watson, luxurious Westbrook, suburban Heywood, gang-infested Pacifica, and industrial Santo Domingo. Players can explore these locations both on foot or in a vehicle. Night City also has dynamic weather and a day/night cycle. Both of these affect the way NPCs behave. Vehicular travel can be done in both first-person and third-person mode. You can also automate the driving of your car to focus on gunfights. This means vehicular combat is available as well. Safe to say you can expect some high-speed chases in the story mode.
Cyberpunk 2077 Combat Gameplay, Classes, and Abilities — The combat of the game itself is from a first-person perspective in a shooter style gameplay design. You’ll also have access to melee extensions and weapons that can help you in combat and traversal. For example, you can use arm blades to either fight or scale walls.
Your combat moves and skills are determined by what build you give your character. There are various classes and these classes then branch out into abilities which are all a part of your cybernetics. You can upgrade your “cyberware” implants by visiting a “ripperdoc” and spending the in-game currency known as “eurodollars.”
Cyber implants vary in expense depending on where they’re acquired and what they can do. Military expansions or black market implants, for example, are more expensive.
Within combat, you also have access to both bullet-time and a ranged weapon “ricochet” system to bounce bullets off walls and into enemies. There are four types of damage that you can inflict – physical, thermal, EMP, and chemical. Your bionic eye is what will help you identify which type of damage is needed after scanning an enemy.
The player character will be identified through the story’s events as V.
V’s gender, class, and style will all be determined by the player. This includes facial features, hairstyles, body modifications, clothing, and physical attributes.
The attributes you can customize are Strength, Constitution, Intelligence, Reflex, Tech, and Cool. These all can be found in the three available classes: Techrunner, a hacking focused class, techie, machinery focused class, and solo, combat-focused class. V can earn experience through doing missions and random exploration. They can also earn a commodity known as “street cred” by doing side missions. Street cred unlocks new vendors, skills and more quests.
Regarding quests, CD Projekt Red has emphasized that Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay isn’t as linear and restricted as the Witcher 3. There are a vast amount of ways you can complete the main story.
The only time you’ll ever be seeing a “game over” screen is when you die. Other than that, failure in an objective won’t stop the game from moving on. Instead, it’ll make you deal with the consequences of your mistake/decision.
Cyberpunk 2077 also promises to have memorable NPCs that you can have various interactions with. This includes sexual relationships as well.
Cyberpunk 2077 Gameplay Trailers From 2013 and Beyond
The first time we saw Cyberpunk 2077 was back in 2013 even before the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. CD Projekt RED Cyberpunk 2077 CGI trailer gave us only a peek into things to come. It was an enticing trailer and fans wanted more, however, CD Projekt RED went silent for the next few years before we finally got a better look at Cyberpunk.
Not long after the trailer release, Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt RED dropped a 48-min gameplay video. This was the first we saw Cyberpunk 2077 in action. The trailer took us to various districts of Night City and introduced a number of characters. But most importantly, Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay video revealed its combat mechanics.
There are plenty of fun and interesting takeaways from the gameplay trailer for Cyberpunk 2077. Hacking seems to be a major part of the Cyberpunk 2077 experience. The player can use non-lethal takedowns and hack into the enemies network.
Enemy networks have an interconnected web of their allies. This allows you to track enemy location and after upgrading your hacking tools, you can even perform remote kills. There are multiple modules of hacking such as a jackhammer, code-cracker, DVV, Shield Beta, Pingy, and Brain Wipe.
Jackhammer seemingly destroys hideouts with short-circuits and Code Crackers looks pretty self-explanatory. It will possibly be used to unlock doors and hack into terminals etc. Shield Beta might be used to disable enemy defenses and Pingy sounds like a network disruption ability.
We can’t figure out what DVV is but Brain Wipe might be used to wipe out enemy memories. There is also a gameplay mechanic called quick hack and while there are multiple uses of this, in the gameplay video we can only see “Weapon Jammed.”
“Where is Johnny” is something we see multiple times in the gameplay video. It is written on walls, doors, and staircase across Night City. It is an easter egg for Cyberpunk 2020. Johnny was a rocker boy from Cyberpunk 2020.
There is even a poster of his concert in V’s room. But the most interesting part of V’s room is a vending machine that orders prostitutes known as “Joyboys” and “Joygirls.” You can not only order food and drinks out of this vending machine but also place orders for prostitutes.
Cyberpunk 2077 E3 2019 Appearance Confirmed – What to Expect?
Developer CD Projekt RED has confirmed its presence at E3 2019. The developer plans to show Cyberpunk 2077 at E3 2019 during Microsoft’s press keynote. Fans were wondering for months if CD Projekt RED would be at Electronic Entertainment Expo. The studio took to Twitter to confirm its presence at E3 this year.
Now the question is, what can we expect? A new gameplay trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 is a no-brainer. CDPR will definitely give us another look at the game but will we see a release date? Probably.
Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay trailer we discussed earlier had a poster of Rocker Boy Johnny with a concert date of May 31. This could be an indication of the game’s release window considering CDPR’s history with the month of May. Microsoft’s E3 2019 press keynote is scheduled for June 9 and most Xbox related festivities will end on June 11. Xbox Boss Phil Spencer will take the stage to discuss Xbox but before the end of the show, we will see Cyberpunk. However, that’s not the most exciting part about CDPR’s presence at E3 2019.
CDPR is planning to release another AAA RPG before the end of 2021. The release roadmap was confirmed by community moderator Donata Popławska when he said: “as far as the strategy of the CD Projekt Capital Group for 2016-2021 is concerned, its plans to release the second AAA game by 2021 remain unchanged.”
The mystery second project could be a new IP or it could be what everybody wants it to be, The Witcher 4. Poplawska was asked about this second project but he refused to comment, saying that “We are currently focusing on the production and promotion of Cyberpunk, so we do not want to comment on further projects.”
News regarding this mystery project will be shared by the end of 2020. Of course, this means that the next game from CD Projekt RED will release on next-generation consoles, Xbox Anaconda and PlayStation 5.
Cyberpunk 2077 Release Date — When Is Cyberpunk 2077 Coming Out?
The majority of the fanbase is hoping to get a date soon. As it is right now, Cyberpunk 2077 doesn’t have a set release date. This is despite the game’s development having been announced since 2012.
People are speculating an official Cyberpunk 2077 release date to be announced at E3 2019. Rumors are also afoot of the game releasing within the third quarter of this year. E3 may or may not confirm this theory. People expected the game’s release to be last year as well. CD Projekt Red has been working on Cyberpunk 2077 for the past 5-6 years and it is about time we at least get a release date.
Now, they’ve confirmed to be also working on another AAA title, meaning Cyberpunk’s development has been sandwiched between two other games (The Witcher 3 and a second game). This gives a bit of clarity to the delayed release date.
As mentioned earlier, the departure of Cyberpunk 2077’s creative director might also have something to do with delayed production. It was never officially confirmed whether his work was completed or not before he left.
The fact that the entire game is hand-crafted with the absence of procedural generation also means that CD Projekt Red took the time to customize every nook and cranny of Night City to make sure it felt alive. Such an intimate process obviously takes a lot of time.
Optimization was also one of the heavily focused features of Cyberpunk 2077. That much is evident from how CD Projekt Red have emphasized the game’s accessibility and how everybody should be able to play it. The optimization route must have faced a delay after the studio most likely revisited it upon the confirmation of Cyberpunk 2077 on the Xbox One X as well.
A platform that didn’t exist back when the game was announced. In March, we saw a behind the scenes video about the development of Cyberpunk 2077. The video was pretty cool and even narrated by the voice of Geralt himself. One very important detail at the very end of the video was the statement on Cyberpunk 2077 still being far from over.
They also told us not to expect the game anytime soon. This is despite the 4-year dormant status that the company took over the past few years. The 40-minute footage last year definitely holds promise, however, of the game being in a very playable state. As stated before it’s still far from complete though. We don’t have any promises for a demo or beta testing phase either.
The game has evaded revealing more about itself at places like the Golden Joystick awards as well as the video game awards of 2019. This is despite the game being recognized as the most wanted game at the Golden Joystick awards.
Is the game still currently being delayed due to side projects at CD Projekt Red? They’re supposedly working on another AAA project while simultaneously managing Cyberpunk 2077 without its creative director.
Fans are definitely patient, however. The only irk people have is with PC store availability. CD Project RED has assured us that the game will be available on the GOG store as well as Steam.
No Epic Store exclusivity will be claiming Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt Red also confirmed Warner Brothers as a distributor for Cyberpunk 2077 back in October which implies a release date being closer upon us. Still, could’ve been a decision made heavily in advance. The last opportunity we have of finding out just when Cyberpunk 2077 will be releasing is this upcoming E3. Until then, it’s anybody’s guess. Hopefully, the hype gives us patience.
What Lies Beyond Cyberpunk 2077? – The Possibility of The Witcher 4
It is safe to say that the sun has set on Geralt’s journey but that doesn’t mean we are done with The Witcher 4. There is so much lore and so many characters to explore in The Witcher universe. And with so many awards and over 25 million copies sold in the series, CD Projekt RED has more than enough reasons to come back to The Witcher series.
We knew it would be a long time before we see the next Witcher but it has already been 4 years since the release of The Witcher 3 and by the time CD Projekt RED releases its second AAA game, it will be 5 years.
The Witcher 4 release date, if it is in development, will be set somewhere in 2021. We will still need to wait over a year before we get anything related to The Witcher 4 and its release date. The Witcher 3 took over 3 years to complete while Cyberpunk has been in development for 5 years. There is no evidence at the moment that The Witcher 4 is in development.
Speaking with Eurogamer, CD Projekt RED co-founder Marcin Iwinski stressed that a new Witcher is not in development and it will be a long time before there is a new Witcher game.
This is the end […] there won’t be any Witcher any time soon – if there ever will be one.
Not all news points to the end of Geralt and a late The Witcher 4 release. Iwinski confirmed that they “are not killing the world and walking away with it.” Meanwhile, CEO Adam Kiciński had this to say about The Witcher 4:
The first three ‘Witchers’ were by definition a trilogy, so we simply could not name the next game ‘The Witcher 4’. This does not mean, of course, that we will leave the world of The Witcher.
He confirmed that this franchise is a part of the company’s future.
The Witcher is one of two franchises on which to build the future activities of the company. Today, unfortunately, I can not reveal anything more.
It is also understandable that the Witcher series needs to rest for some time. Developers have spent 15-years of their lives working on these games and it is time they work on something different, Cyberpunk 2077 gives them that opportunity.
If there is another Witcher game (or whatever they choose to name it), where will it take us? The Witcher 3 and all of its DLC pretty much conclude Geralt’s story. There 40 different endings to The Witcher 3 but whatever route you take the endings leave very little room for the return of Geralt.
Thankfully, Ciri can lead the next Witcher game. She can be the perfect character to take the lead on the next game but of course, we wouldn’t be too against having a completely new Witcher at the helm.
Cyberpunk 2077 Pre Order – How and Where to Buy?
Cyberpunk 2077 pre order is live on Amazon and other online retailers. We do not know if there are going to be multiple special editions of the game but considering CD Projekt RED’s history, there may not be anything other than the base edition.
Cyberpunk 2077 pre order is available for $59.99 right now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. There are no pre-order bonuses for Cyberpunk 2077 but some may be announced close to the game’s release.
Moreover, CDPR confirmed that there will be no microtransaction in the upcoming sci-fi RPG game nor will there be DRM. Similar to The Witcher 3, developers won’t be implementing DRM in Cyberpunk 2077 as well.
This does raise the chance of piracy but CD Projekt RED sees it differently.
We don’t want to assault anyone. Each time we are thinking about a decision, the first rule is we have to treat gamers like we’d like to be treated. We don’t believe in DRM because we hate DRM. It also doesn’t protect, not really.
Games are cracked in minutes, hours or days, but they’re always cracked. If you want to pirate you’ll find a way. But if you’re a committed gamer and are buying the game why should we place a barrier on you?
The studio further stated that as long as they release a quality game, fans will support them. Interestingly, this method was proven right with the release of The Witcher 3. Fans supported the game since day one and same is expected to be the same with Cyberpunk 2077.
Cyberpunk 2077 pre order isn’t yet available on Steam, Epic Store, and GoG. PC players can look for a copy on other retailers. However, most will choose to pre order Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam.
Cyberpunk 2077 News — Lady Gaga, Development Issues, Kanye West, And More
Regarding the game’s development, Cyberpunk 2077 has had smooth sailing so far. One of the most prominent things that CD Projekt Red wanted everybody to know is that Cyberpunk 2077 will be very accessible. This means it won’t be an Epic Store exclusive.
This is a point that CD Projekt Red very specifically made. Likely due to the controversies surrounding video game developers nowadays that have been pushing forward Epic Store exclusivity. Something gamers as consumers hate due to the Epic Store’s catering focused solely on developers.
Furthermore, Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t even going to be exclusive on the GoG store, GoG being the parent company to CD Projekt Red. Cyberpunk may still be made available on the Epic Store, but not as an exclusive. It will also be available on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. No plans have been announced yet of being ported or released on the next generation of consoles.
Cyberpunk 2077 won’t be having any demos or open betas either by the looks of it. Besides the 40 minute footage we were shown last year, the only time we’ll have proper access to Cyberpunk 2077 is when the game officially releases.
One interesting part of Cyberpunk 2077 news was when the creative director of Cyberpunk 2077, Sebastian Stepien, left CD Projekt Red to join Activision Blizzard. This departure was made for an unknown project that people are speculating to be Diablo 3. Whether or not this departure affected the development of Cyberpunk 2077 is unknown. Maybe all his work was done before he left.
The reason for doing so was reportedly being offered more money by Activision Blizzard. Most of the reasons remained private, however.
There are also rumors circling about of Lady Gaga being involved with Cyberpunk 2077. This theory started when CD Projekt Red retweeted a tweet of hers so it’s not much to go by. We don’t know for sure if Lady Gaga will be in Cyberpunk 2077 or not. If she is, we don’t know if the role is as an in-game character or a contribution to the soundtrack.
Ever since last year’s E3, CD Projekt Red has kept Cyberpunk 2077 under tight wraps. The game didn’t appear at the video game awards or any other conferences in recent months. People are hoping for more info and hopefully a release date this coming E3. This is despite being declared the most wanted game at the golden joystick awards last year.
Another outlandish theory slightly related to the Lady Gaga news is the possible appearance of Kanye West within the game. This one was concocted by the act of Kanye following CD Projekt Red and Cyberpunk 2077 on Twitter. The reason this caught attention was the fact that Kanye follows very select people. Everyone that he has followed is either inspiration to him or somebody he’s collaborated with. This means he’s either following Cyberpunk 2077 as a hyped up fan or because he has some connection to the game.
Speaking of hype, CD Projekt Red hasn’t held back on generating hype for the upcoming AAA title. The 40-minute gameplay footage alone was enough to induce a huge spike in excitement for people looking forward to the game. Comparisons made by CD to the Witcher 3 have also been plentiful, saying Cyberpunk will be a better experience. Fan favorite features like a photo mode have also been confirmed.
The twitch stream of Cyberpunk 2077’s gameplay preview was also watched by nearly half a million people around the world.
The game hasn’t faced any controversies so far, aside from a minor scuffle with some over sensitive community members. This enraged mini-mob was triggered by a supposedly “inappropriate” joke made by the Twitter handle of Cyberpunk 2077. Luckily it didn’t lead to anything happening.
We will keep updating the article as we get more information about the game. We will cover E3 2019 where Cyberpunk will make a prominent appearance, so stay tuned for Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay, release date, and other news.
