Frank Lampard says the next two games are huge for Derby County’s hopes of booking a place in the play-offs.
Saturday’s 4-0 home victory over Bolton Wanderers coupled with Bristol City’s 2-1 defeat by Aston Villa at Villa Park has left Derby two points outside the top six.
Bristol City are sixth on 65 points while Derby have 63 points.
Both have five games left and they meet at Ashton Gate on April 27.
Before that, Derby face Birmingham City at St Andrew’s on Good Friday and then Queens Park Rangers at Pride Park Stadium on Easter Monday.
Bristol City are at home to Reading on Friday and then travel to Hillsborough to tackle Sheffield Wednesday.
Middlesbrough sit between the two teams in seventh on 64 points. They are at home to Stoke City on Friday before facing an away game at Nottingham Forest on Easter Monday. Boro have played a game more.
Looking at the table, Lampard said: “It has tightened up again, and I don’t think it is the last twist. I think we are going to see a few. I think it will go to the wire.
“The fact we have to play Bristol City, that will be important as long as we do well in the games before that.
“The next two games are huge for us.
“If we can get results at Birmingham and against QPR over the Easter period, I think it will leave us certainly knocking on the door of the top six.
“The six points on offer are huge because that takes us into the last week of the season where we have three very tough games, so let’s try to go into it in the best possible shape.
“What we must believe is that if we perform like we did against Bolton, if we can get the results that performances like that bring, then we have a great chance.
“We have a great chance of the play-offs and at the start of the season, we would definitely have been happy with that. So we must keep fighting.
Derby County 4-0 Bolton Wanderers – reaction
“Birmingham away will be a tough game. They are a team that have performed pretty well this year under difficult circumstances.
“They are physical and organised, but the stakes are high for us now and it’s massive. We really need to attack those two games.”
