Almost 50 arrest warrants have been issued in the last two weeks, as police try to track down people who failed to turn up for court.
49 people have been called to answer charges at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court for a range of offences.
However, they did not attend their hearings so the court has issued warrants for their arrest.
These cases all took place over a period of two weeks from Monday, February 18.
If a defendant who has not turned up is represented, their solicitor will usually be asked if they have heard from the defendant and whether they know of his or her whereabouts.
This, more often than not, results in the stock reply: “I have no explanation for the absence and can’t resist the inevitable application for a warrant.”
Occasionally, if there is a genuine reason for a person’s absence, such as illness or being in hospital, a warrant with bail can be issued or the case can simply be adjourned.
