Judicial recount for the West Sepik Provincial seat is nearing completion while preparations for the Chimbu Provincial seat are progressing well. Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato said that recount for West Sepik Provincial seat has got six more eliminations as of Tuesday this week to be done before the winner is determined. “Returning Officer for West Sepik Provincial Steven Gore Kaupa has advised that the recount is expected to be completed in Vanimo by this evening (Friday, 7 December, 2018) or on Saturday (8 December, 2018).” “Once completed, the results will be returned to the National Court in Waigani for verification and declaration of the winning candidate at a date yet to be fixed.” For Chimbu Provincial, Mr Gamato said that preparations are being done in Lae where a total of 258,000 ballot papers will be recounted as ordered by the court. He said that the Returning Officer for Chimbu Provincial Kila Ralai and his two Assistant Returning Officers Simon Soheke and Anna Pame will be on site along with PNGEC Lawyer to oversee the movement of ballot boxes from Kundiawa to Lae next week which Lae police will provide escort. Mr Gamato said that the Chimbu Provincial Election Steering Committee (PESC) will meet next Monday to be briefed on the court’s decision and assessment reports. Meanwhile, the Electoral Commissioner pointed out that funding is inadequate to complete West Sepik and Chimbu judicial recounts and PNGEC may require additional funding as per the separate recount budgets submitted to Finance Department.
