Why do we have provincial councils? That is a question that Penama Provincial Councillor James Tari is now asking the government. In a telephone conversation with the councillor, he stated his concern and disappointment towards the way aid money for disaster relief was being handled by the national government. He questions what the use of having a provincial government is if no consultation was made with the provincial government before carrying out these decisions. As Chairman of the planning committee of the province, he further stated that the national government seem to be directing a lot of aid money coming in from overseas towards development of infrastructure, mainly schools and roads on neighbouring Maewo and Pentecost islands and not directly dealing with the victims of disaster. The Tokatana area councillor continued to say that it is as if the leaders are using the disaster as a way to get funding for the development of the neighbouring islands. Councillor James Tari hails from Natakaro Village on the west side of Ambae and is currently on Santo, where his whole village has been evacuated to.
