Luis Enrique’s four untouchables La Rojita’s qualifying campaign for the Under-21s European Championship finished with Spain scoring seven times away at Iceland, while conceding twice. It was a festival of goals and the result sees Spain’s Under-21s add another three points to their collection, finishing the campaign with nine victories and just one defeat – a 2-1 loss against Northern Ireland. While they had already qualified for next summer’s tournament in Italy, coach Luis de la Fuente played a strong side and they were simply too much for their Icelandic counterparts. There may not have been any goals in the first quarter of the match, but Real Sociedad’s Mikel Oyarzabal then put his side 1-0 up from the penalty spot in the 24th minute, before Las Palmas’ Rafa Mir added two more in the 25th and 40th minutes. Jon Thorsteinsson of Iceland was able to pull one back a minute after Mir’s second, however his teammate Hordur Gunnarsson turned the ball into his own net in first half stoppage time to make it 4-1 to the visitors at the interval. Valencia midfielder Carlos Soler and Iceland’s Ottar Karlsson traded goals in the 54th and 58th minutes, before Spain rounded off the victory with a sixth and a seventh, with Levante’s Borja Mayoral and Napoli’s Fabian Ruiz scoring in the third-from-last and the last minutes.
