Virgil van Dijk was forced to retire early during Liverpool’s dominant performance against Southampton with an injury. The Dutchman was substituted just 10 minutes into the second-half after signalling to the bench that he needed to come off. It wasn’t clear how or where the centre-back, who had played well up until his untimely withdrawal from the field, picked up the injury but he was holding his stomach or possibly his ribs in the centre of the pitch just before Joe Gomez was brought on as his replacement.
