Navas: Zidane always believed in me Costa Rica approach the 2018 World Cup with fond memories of their venture to Brazil four years ago, which Keylor Navas remembers well. As part of his interview with MARCA, the goalkeeper took part in a quickfire round that began with his earliest memory of a World Cup. “For Korea and Japan [in 2002], we were hitting many late nights in Costa Rica,” he reminisced. “The games were at three in the morning and we were staying at the house of a friend of my uncle, it was crazy.” Costa Rica fell out of that tournament due to a heavy defeat versus Brazil in the last group game but 2014 was very different with the win over Greece in the last-16 named as Navas’ best moment. Bryan Ruiz’s goal against Italy that summer also ranks as his favourite ever World Cup strike whereas the quarter-final loss to Netherlands remains his worst memory. Looking ahead to the upcoming competition in Russia, the Real Madrid shot-stopper believes Marco Asensio to be well set to become the revelation of the summer because: “I know what he is capable of.” He hopes Costa Rica are the revelation of the World Cup as well with Spain, Germany and Brazil named as his three favourites for the trophy.
