WE downward dog with Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway, 51, and chat keeping fit, early mornings and Piers Morgan.
Kate, have you always been a yogi?
I got into it when I worked with Penny Smith at GMTV. She is an absolute devotee and used to devise routines in our dressing room. As a busy working mum of two [to Darcey, 12, and Billy, eight], it’s a great stress buster and it’s fantastic for all those core stomach muscles that have turned to jelly since I had my kids.
Well, you look great on it!
I do feel that I have regained my figure all these years on, but then I also became really thin after having Darcey when I developed an overactive thyroid. Breastfeeding also meant that the weight dropped off.
How do you stay motivated to exercise?
I turned 50 last year, and like many women of my age I struggle with my bottom sagging, tummy wobbling and flabby upper arms. I don’t want to look old in my advanced years so I go on a power walk for half an hour every day, and it helps to keep the pounds off.
What is the best and worst part of working on Good Morning Britain?
The negative thing about working on a breakfast show is that the alarm goes off at 2.15am, and I get picked up at 2.30am. That’s just insanely early. But it does mean I get to do the school pick-up most afternoons. The gang on GMB is what really makes it. I love Ben Shephard, Richard Arnold, Susanna Reid and even Piers Morgan.
What do you love about Piers?
He’s great fun to work alongside. There is nothing that he likes more than a good old dust-up, but away from the on-air banter he is a very sweet colleague. He lives for the reaction.
Who’s your favourite celebrity interviewee?
I interviewed Dame Helen Mirren at Cannes Film Festival when she had that famous tumble on the decking, and afterwards she joked: “Oh, Kate, for heaven’s sake, I’ve been campaigning on behalf of the stunt people to get an Oscar for showing me how to do that but they still haven’t got one!”
Would you like your children to follow in your TV presenting footsteps?
I would never deter them from doing TV, or anything they wanted to do, but at the moment it’s hard to say.
One minute Darcey says she wants to be a film director, then it’s a YouTuber.
My son wants to be Spider-Man. I love being a mum. I think if I’d had children earlier, I would have about 45 of them by now, so it’s maybe a good thing that I left it until my late 30s to start a family!

Have you done much dancing since Strictly?
Well, I can’t say that I will ever be remembered for my fancy footwork [Kate was the seventh celebrity to be voted off in 2007], but I still dance in my living room! It’s known as “boogie nights” in our house. My husband Derek [Draper, 50, a psychotherapist] loves to get the disco ball and dry ice machine out. The kids put on dance tunes and we boogie the night away. We must look like complete idiots.
