Joe Jackson, father of pop stars Michael and Janet Jackson and manager of the Jackson 5, has died, according to TMZ. He was 89.

Jackson was battling terminal cancer and passed away early Wednesday morning in Los Angeles, family sources told TMZ. He had been hospitalized earlier this month, the outlet previously reported.

Jackson is famous for managing the Jackson 5 and making solo stars out of his children Michael and Janet. He also founded his own record label, Ivory Tower International Records.

Joe Jackson, Jackson Family Patriarch, Dead At 89 According to TMZ, Joe died at approximately 3:30 AM on Wednesday morning. His family, friends and wife, Katherine Jackson, were by his side. Reports surfaced earlier this week that Jackson was battling pancreatic cancer. The family did not confirm these reports but noted Joe was gravely ill. Joe was always a key figure in the Jackson family history. The first manager of the Jackson Five, he was instrumental in his children’s massive stardom. He and his wife Katherine were married for 60 years. They had 10 children together.

Media: Wibbitz

The relationship with his children wasn’t perfect, however. He was accused by son Michael of abuse growing up, and admitted that he hit his kids with a strap in a 2010 interview with Oprah Winfrey. “It kept them out of jail and kept them right,” he said.

After Michael’s death, Jackson told Piers Morgan that he was glad he was “tough” on his kids. “I came out with some kids that everybody loved all over the world. And they treated everybody right,” he said.

The Jackson family patriarch was born July 26, 1928 in Arkansas, and married wife Katherine in 1949. The couple had 10 kids: Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, Brandon, Michael, Randy, Rebbie, La Toya, Janet.

He is survived by Katherine, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, Randy, Rebbie, La Toya and Janet. Michael died in 2009 and Brandon died shortly after birth.
