The Rolling Stones, Radiohead, Coldplay and Primal Scream all played in Derby but those gigs were all long before they hit their stride. That’s why they fail to make this debatable list of the best gigs ever to take place in Derby. With the exception of Elton John – who also played here in the late 1970s – the city has not been blessed with lots of top live acts of late. However, over the years, there have been a few bands who have visited Derby at a point in their careers when they were at, or reaching, the top of their game. So, without further ado, pin back your ears to take a trip down Derby’s live music memory lane. Oasis at the Wherehouse? May 4, 1994 It cost a fiver to get in and was packed despite the band only having released one single at that point. Blur’s Parklife album had been released about 10 days previously and was being played on a loop prior to the first band coming on so the two bands’ rivalry was yet to emerge. Derby band Cable were the support act and went down well but the main attraction blew the socks off the audience. They looked like a bunch of scruffy scallies which, in fairness, they were but from the opening Rock ‘n’ Roll Star, it was obvious this band were heading for the toppermost of the poppermost.
