Earlier on Monday, Slashgear reported that a bug is being forwarded via WhatsApp messages. This WhatsApp bug when opened, can not just crash the WhatsApp Android app, but even the entire Android device as well.
This isn’t the first time this kind of message bugs have emerged. Recently Apple’s famous iMessage was the victim of numerous bugs that often made the app crash.
“As with any message bomb, it involves sending and receiving a specially crafted message with hidden symbols in-between spaces. Tapping on a portion of the text will basically make the app ‘expand’ the hidden symbols, potentially overloading the app and even the OS,” points out SlashGear.
The website also noted that there seem to be two variants of this WhatsApp message being forwarded. The first one involves an ominous black dot that comes with a warning on what will happen if you tap on it, while the other is worse because doesn’t come with any warning.
“In both cases, the message includes special characters that don’t display visibly but are used to change text behavior. A superfluous amount of these invisible symbols causes WhatsApp to freeze up,” says the report.
WhatsApp has remained silent on the bug and it was first spotted by YouTuber “toberkel”, who demonstrated it in this video.
It seems like May hasn’t been a good month for WhatsApp. Earlier this month, WhatsApp CEO and co-founder Jan Koum announced his departure following a clash with parent company Facebook. It was reported on Friday that Facebook is bringing ads to WhatsApp and that is not going to make users happy.
