The ‘trapped’ traffic in this morning’s incident has now been released. A number of drivers have reported being stuck for more than five hours.

Reopening of the motorway will be phased
Highways England said: “The reopening of the motorway is likely to be phased: lane four will be opened as soon as the police on site investigation has finished, lane three will open while the vehicles are recovered, and lane two will reopen when the vehicle recovery is complete.
“Lane one will require resurfacing, which will be completed overnight (using additional lane closures).”
Lane one will require overnight surfacing
In Highways England’s statement on the incident they have said one of the four lanes heading clockwise on the M25 between junctions eight and nine will need resurfacing.
It said: “Police are currently on scene and will recover the two vehicles as part of their investigation. The recovery is likely to be complex as one has ruptured its fuel tank and spilled diesel across the carriageway.
“Highways England teams are working alongside the police, and will reopen lanes as soon as possible. Lanes two, three and 4 are expected to reopen later today, but lane one will require resurfacing overnight.”
Delays are likely to persist into the evening
Highways England are advising drivers that delays are likely to persist into the evening.
Their statement said: “Drivers are advised that delays on the clockwise M25 in Surrey are likely to persist into the evening following a serious incident earlier today.”
It continued: “Traffic is currently queuing back to between junctions 6 for Godstone and 7 for the M23 and Gatwick Airport.
“Drivers are being diverted off the M25 at junction 8, while traffic stuck behind the closure is being directed past the incident scene.
Some people’s bladders are struggling at this point
Sitting in traffic for four hours without the use of toilet can be hard. This Twitter user is begging police to be let through.
Any chance of letting my wife through, she’s been stuck for 4 hours and needs a wee!?!?

What is the best lane in a traffic jam?
For those stuck in the traffic jam, here are some of the burning questions people have asked in the past about using the M25:
A video from earlier
Driver Nicole Gr has said that she is still at a standstill after three hours of being stuck. Here is a video she took of the traffic earlier:
‘I need water’
One road user who has been stuck at a standstill for three hours is running out of patience.
Nicole Gr said: “I’ve been here for more than three hours, people are running out of gas, cars have stopped, we need to go to the toilet and I need water.
“It’s the worst M25 accident ever. I’ve moved 500 yards.”
A man was airlifted to hospital after the collision this morning
Read the latest on the M25 incident here:
The motorway has been closed in both directions between junctions eight and nine
The motorway has been closed between junctions eight (Reigate) and nine (Leatherhead) in both directions but lane four has been opened in a clockwise direction to let ‘trapped’ traffic out.
A Highways England spokesman said: “The lane is open to let the ‘trapped’ traffic out but as soon as it has all been let through the lane will be closed again.
“It [the motorway] is likely to be closed for some time while investigations take place.”
Diversion in place
Highways England have also put a diversion in place. They have said:
“Diverted traffic should follow hollow triangle diversion routes:
From M25 J8 exit slip to “Reigate interchange” roundabout take 3rd exit onto A217 towards London
At A240 Burgh Heath, turn left at traffic signals onto A240 towards Kingston
At A240 Ewell roundabout, take 3rd exit onto A24 towards Central London
At Organ Crossroads follow A240 towards Kingston
At A3 “Tolworth Interchange”, take 1st exit at roundabout onto A3 towards Portsmouth
Follow A3 to M25 J10.
Road users are advised to allow plenty of extra time for their journeys or to use an alternative route if possible.”
‘Police investigations are needed and a large fuel spillage must be treated.’
Highways England have released an official statement.
It reads: “In Surrey, there are severe delays on the M25 clockwise due to a serious collision closing the road between J8 and J9.
Delays of approximately 90 minutes are being measured on the approach between Redhill and Leatherhead.
Two hour standstill
One driver has reported being stuck in the same position for two hours.
Nicole Gr said: “I’ve been at a standstill for two hours. There is a big queue in front and behind me. I saw one ambulance and then two highway cars at 9.15am. From the on, nothing.”
Air ambulance landing
Anticlockwise lanes were closed earlier while an air ambulance had to land but these have since been reopened.
‘Considerable fuel leak across all 4 lanes’
Surrey Road Police have tweeted saying they are working to open lane four past the scene as the oil spillage covers all four lanes.
@HighwaysSEAST are working to open lane 4 of the #M25 past the scene. There is a considerable fuel leak across all 4 lanes. This is both very dangerous especially to motorcyclists and if not cleared will cause damage to the road surface. We thank you for your patience.

Congestion both clockwise and anticlockwise
A number of people have posted on social media saying traffic is still congested in both directions. Both clockwise lanes remain stopped while emergency services attend the incident.
Anticlockwise lanes now open
An air ambulance had to land on anticlockwise lanes causing them to close. These have now been reopened and the traffic has been released.
