Ed Sheeran has been pictured in New York after skipping the Grammy Awards at the weekend.

The Shape Of You hitmaker wasn’t at the ceremony, at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, despite picking up two prizes for his single and album, Divide.

People watching the awards asked why Ed wasn’t there to collect his gongs, despite the fact that he was actually in New York.

But it turns out he’d slept through them – although he hasn’t said whether or not he intended to.

The following day, he took to Instagram to reveal why he hadn’t shown up.

Alongside a picture of his cat, he wrote: “Woke up to the news I won two grammys last night. Thank you ! This little fluff-ball is doing a bit of a celebratory dance, lots of love to everyone xx”

He was pictured today heading out for lunch and was seen last night going to the Elton John tribute concert at Madison Square Garden.

The flame-haired singer, who recently announced his engagement to Cherry Seaborn , was wrapped up today in a long black coat, with a blue jumper underneath, a very similar outfit to the one he wore to last night’s concert.

Last night, he carried an iPad as he headed into the show, keeping his head down as photographers snapped him.

Mirror Online has contacted Ed’s representatives for comment.

Ed was booed at the Grammy Awards after his name was called out as the winner of the Best Pop Solo Performance.

He scooped the prize at the 60th Grammy Awards in Madison Square in New York on Sunday. James Corden hosted and the event was broadcast live on CBS.

The singer won the accolade for his song Shape Of You, but much of the audience booed. On social media, it became evident that many believed the record obsesses too heavily on the female body.

In light of the powerful #MeToo movement, a lot of people thought another of the nominated artists – P!NK, Lady Gaga, Kesha, and Kelly Clarkson – should’ve won. Ed was the only man in the category.

One person commented: “Lady Gaga wrote Million Reasons in a healing process to recover from a severe heartbreak. Kesha wrote Praying after being through her literal worst nightmare.

“Ed Sheeran wrote Shape Of You about a club girl he was horny for. Congratulations Recording Academy. Thank you for this.”

Another wrote: “Kesha really did go through hell and back to release Praying and get nominated for a Grammy, only to lose to an Ed Sheeran song about how he likes a woman’s body over a Sia sample.”

Ed also picked up the award for Pop Vocal Album on a night that also saw a spectacular performance from Kesha, and an inspirational speech from Janelle Monae.

In the lead up to the Grammys, controversy had already taken hold. Awards president Neil Portnow told Variety that if women need to “step up” if they want more Grammys.
