EMMERDALE’s boss has confirmed that Emma Barton was murdered as the soap launches an exciting whoddunit storyline.
The killer nurse – who was played by actress Gillian Kearney in the ITV soap – was pushed off the viaduct during last week’s major week in the village, and now it has been confirmed that she was murdered and one villager offed her.
Producer Iain MacLeod said: “Now we’ve revealed Emma’s death as a whodunit, there’s lots of characters to point the finger at, because Emma’s trodden on so many peoples’ toes in the village that there’s no shortage of potential suspects.”
Police turned up in the village tonight with the news that they were launching a murder investigation into her death.
Emma plunged from the viaduct bridge after seemingly deciding to take her own life, but viewers discovered that her son Ross was there at the same time.
And he’s not the only villager with a grudge against the murderous nurse with her either offending or trying to kill nearly everyone at one point or another.
Detectives arrived in the village and watched Ross and his brother Pete as they mourned their brother Finn after he was killed after he was shot in the woods by Emma accidentally.
“They look upset,” one of the detectives said as they watched the brothers mourn Finn.
“Unfortunately things are only going to get worse,” the other detective revealed.
“There was no suicide note – that means there’s a lot more questions to answer starting tomorrow.”
Viewers were convinced last week that Ross had in fact murdered his mother after he was shown fleeing from the viaduct after she fell.
Running down the bank to the valley below, he nearly reached Emma as she slipped away but instead ran off when a dog walker found her body.
Viewers are now convinced that Ross killed his mother out of revenge for her shooting his brother Finn dead, and killing his dad James Barton.

Another said: “Hmmm did Ross push Emma? If he did good on him!”
“She’s been pushed, hasn’t she? My guess is by Ross,” tweeted a third.
Show boss Iain MacLeod told The Sun Online that he had Emma’s exit in mind as soon as actress Gillian Kearney told him she was planning on leaving the show.
“I’ve given away a bit of a trade secret here but as soon as an actor says I think I want to leave at the end of my contract, even as they’re talking, my brain is going how are they going to leave, is it going to be a death?
“There was just a nice symmetry to that and because this week is designed to b the final chapter in the no return story from last year, we actually talked extensively about even making the pictures looking quite similar so that there is a deliberate parallel to be drawn there.

“So that was pretty much the first thing that popped into my head after oh I’m so sorry to hear that – how am I going to kill you off?
“It was very deliberately an echo of all of that. The sequence when you come to see it is pictorially quite beautiful and a bit serene really, so it’s like James’s death but less anguished.
“She’s not screaming in terror in quite the same way he was.”
