More than 13,000 people have signed a petition calling for Benjamin Wilson to be freed, after he was jailed for trying to stop his abusive father attacking his mother. The 22-year-old battered his dad with a hammer at their family home after hearing crashing and shouting coming from a bedroom. His father, Craig, was left with brain damage and holes in his head, but Wilson said he was defending his mother from a man described in court as a “violent nasty drunk”. Wilson – a new father himself – was jailed for six years after admitting wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, but the sentence has sparked outrage and calls for him to be freed. A “Free Ben Wilson” e-petition has now gathered almost 14,000 signatures from around the world, and a “Help Free Ben Wilson” Facebook page has hundreds of likes.
