Head of the Football Department Mai Duc Chung nominated Portuguese coach Henrique Calisto, who is now the Head Coach of Dong Tam Long An club, as Head Coach of the national team.
At a recent meeting of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Chung proposed the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) invite Calisto to lead the national squad at the AFF Cup in December 2008.
According to Chung, the VFF should sign an up-to $20,000, four-month contract (from September to December) with Calisto. Chung will manage the U23 team himself. VFF Chairman Nguyen Trong Hy hasn’t made a final decision yet.
“I’m waiting for an official invitation from VFF. I believe that after seven years working in Vietnam, my knowledge and experience is valuable. But if I’m invited, I’ll have to consider several factors before agreeing because my contract with Dong Tam is still valid,” Calisto said.
According to VFF standards, the new coach of the national football team must be a foreigner who has a deep knowledge of Vietnamese football and pay will not exceed $25,000. It is said that apart from Calisto, another choice is Thai coach Chanvit.
“We have not decided who will be the new coach of the national team. Several coaches we have considered have asked for too high a salary. We will carefully refer to the opinions of members of the National Coaching Board,” said VFF Chairman Nguyen Trong Hy.
