Harrogate Golf Club – AGM: The 87th HGC AGM was held on Saturday at Rudding Park, as the club’s own car park was occupied by travellers. The meeting unanimously approved the election of officers, Captain Elect, Gordon Meadows, Chairman of competition, Andy Tipling and Frank Beckett graciously accepted a further year in the post of Hon. Treasurer. Ian Barnett and David Carr were elected to Council.
Warm thanks were extended to the retiring President Barry Martin for his sterling service to all sections of the club throughout his two year tenure.
John R Robinson, following unanimous approval, assumes the Presidents mantel for 2006. John, a staunch supporter of HGC, was Captain in 1994 and Captain of Captains in 2003.
John Kean, the 2005 Captain expressed his deep gratitude to all members of the Council, the professional Paul Johnson, and all members who had given him enormous support through the year, making his term in office a pleasure. With the approval of the meeting John’s final duty was to present a jacket of office to the 2006 captain.
2006 Captain
Derek J Moorhouse
Derek was born in India in 1945 and educated at Scarborough College. Upon leaving school he joined the Appleyard Group of Companies in Leeds where he met his wife Jane.
He then joined Castrol in 1970 where he worked as Business Development Manager for the North of England and after 33 years took early retirement in 2003.
Early sporting interests included squash and cricket, playing in the Wetherby League for 15 years before taking up golf.
Derek has been a member of Harrogate for 25 years, and is joined by wife Jane and son Tim (playing handicap of two).
Derek and Jane also have a daughter Nicola who to quote “has not the slightest interest in playing golf,” but is otherwise fully occupied as Sales and Marketing Manager at the RAC in Epsom.
The Captains drive in went ahead despite less than ideal conditions on Sunday.
Derek, supported by a considerable gathering, dispatched the ball from the first tee with a relaxed swing, an achievement he hopes to emulate in Saturday’s medal. A good humoured luncheon followed and was enjoyed by all who attended.
Ladies: Rain once more caused the closure of the course on Tuesday March 28, so the Yorkshire Fours were held on Tuesday at which time we will be able to enjoy our newly refurbished locker room.
Ripon City Golf Club
Ladies: Despite extremely wet weather the Ladies Stableford took place on Tuesday March 28.
The soggy conditions and tricky greens, still being worked on by the ground staff, made the course long and difficult.
Results – Silver Div: 1, J Frost; 2, J Crack.
Bronze Div:1, Mary Parry; 2, J Dransfield.
The Foursome Australian Spoons competition for Bronze Div was won by Betty Baker and Eleanor Heseltine who go forward to the final.
Last Thursday the Ladies and Seniors held a social game. The teams consisted of two ladies and two seniors playing off 3/4 handicaps, with the ladies having courtesy shots due to playing from the men`s card.
The format was a stableford with all scores to count on par 5s, three scores on par 3s and two scores on par 4s.
Results: 1, Pat Parkin, Jeamn Waring, Alistair Miller and Arthur Crumpton; 2, Josie Mason, Jenny Atkinson, Keith Clarke, Peter Mason.
The specila trophy given by Richard Hackie for the best individual score by a lady and gentleman was won by Jenny Atkinson and David Price.
Men’s section: The arrival of spring is confirmed by the news that the Seniors have completed their winter league, which began back in October, taking place over 22 Thursday mornings, and covering an entertaining variety of competitions involving singles, pairs and trios. With 40 members taking part, and points being awarded for those finishing in the winners’ enclosure each week, Club Secretary, Mick Doig, ran out a handsome winner, from Alan Coppock and Terry Judge in second and third respectively. Those who think we have endured a hard winter should note that the Seniors did not have to cancel any single Thursday morning event this season.
Teams of three, with two scores to count on each hole, fought out a Stableford contest on Saturday, March 25. The bitter wind of the last few weeks had relaxed its grip, but with a three-quarters handicap allowance per player, a total of 80 points was a formidable target.
Special mention should be made of the two Pauls, Crompton and Fairhurst, who came fourth despite being a depleted team of only two people.
Stableford results – teams of three, with the best two points scores on each hole to count: 1, Pete Petrou (20), Ian Nelson (13), Cliff Twineham (9) 85; 2, Pete Elsworth (8), Eddie Baier (12), Chris Croasdale (9) 81; 3, Bob Shulver (12), Nick Jackson (6), Nick Edmondson (12) 80.
The early starters in the April Medal had to contend with the most hostile conditions, specifically heavy rain and a penetrating wind. While the weather improved in the afternoon, the saturated ground and awkward greens affected play throughout the day.
Over 90 members took part, and the difficulty of the task they faced is confirmed by the fact that only two of them managed to better a nett score of 70, while there were 26 ‘no returns’ on the results board.
Pride of place goes to Ian Sherwin who produced an outstanding round in the circumstances, not surprisingly the lowest gross total of the event.
A pre-season social evening is to be held in the clubhouse on Saturday April 29, featuring quizzes and a buffet.
Further ahead, the Rabbits section has an exciting day to look forward to on July 17, when the Rabbits Captain’s Away Day takes place at Sand Moor Golf Club in Leeds; 27 holes of golf and refreshments are on the agenda.
A new drinking fountain, situated at the 14th tee which celebrates the life of the late Malcolm Clegg, our 2003 Captain, is now fully operational, so members and guests should take a refreshing sip, smile, and remember Malcolm, before launching their ball over, or into, the pond.
Medal results April 1 – Division One: 1, Ian Sherwin 73, 5, 68; 2, Jamie Wilkinson 75, 4, 71; 3, John Bassitt 77, 6, 71.
Division Two: 1, Mike Pearson 86, 14, 72; 2, Steve Herron 85, 12, 73; 3, David Franklin 87, 13, 74.
Division Three: 1, Ron Beecroft 88, 19, 69; 2, Ben Rowatt 88, 18, 70; 3, Dave Tench 89, 17, 72.
Wetherby Golf Club
New captain Brian Kelly
Wetherby’s new Captain came into golf via the cricket field.
Initially in the Sheffield League, Brian joined the golf club in 1968 then after three years went back to cricket in the Wetherby League before hanging up his pads in 1987.
His interest in cricket continues particularly as the founder of the Kelly Cup, the annual match between local cricketers and the golfers.
During one of these dual matches, immediately prior to the burning down of the Wetherby cricket pavilion, his Vice-Captain Tony Page helped its demise with a six over the bowler’s head to notch up his hundred and knock three tiles off the roof!
Brian, now retired, has been in the Sheffield steel and tool business all his working life apart from his RAF service where he served in air traffic control at Topcliffe.
With the Wharfe in flood and lapping the river bank just inches below the break though level, Greg Turner the Junior Captain, drove into office on Sunday.
Then, before he and his vice-Captain Ben Ragg together with club Captain Brian Kelly and vice-Captain Tony Page had reached the first green, the rain began to fall heavily again.
With 17 fourballs due to follow them out the thought in the clubhouse was whether the coastguards should be put on alert to muster a fleet of inflatables should an emergency rescue be needed.
Fortunately the course flooding was avoided and what is more all the teams battled through appalling conditions to finish in time for dinner and the prize presentation.
Greg Turner’s appointment as Junior Captain is richly deserved. Now in his final year of A’ levels he is playing off a seven handicap and standing at six feet tall. Many remember him starting to play golf when his driver was bigger than he was and his golf bag about the same height!
Although neither of his parents play the game they made a significant contribution on Sunday by organising the half-way house supplying welcome warmth with hot drinks to the saturated competitors. They also raised 100 for club charities.
The season officially opens on Saturday with the Lee Trophy Qualifying competition combined with the Lombard Trophy. The advanced booking sheet is virtually full ensuring an entry approaching 200 for one of the 32 places for the knock-out rounds.
Prize Winners – Junior Captain’s Drive-In: 1, 110pts. Simon Edwards, Phil Pearson, Phil Holmes, Mark Daubney; 2, 107pts. Michael Large, Damian Sivajoti, Will Atkinson, Richard Wilkinson; 3, 102pts. David Atkinson, Colin Struthers, Mike Waldron, Karuna Sivajoti.
Bedale Golf Club
New Members Am-Am: A first for Bedale Golf Club was the introduction of an Am-Am competition to welcome all the new members who had joined the club since January 2005.
All new members were invited to play in teams of four, selected by the organiser – hardworking committee member John Forrester. On the completion of their rounds they were treated to soup and sandwiches before the presentation of prizes by Jim Shaw the Clubs Vice Captain who was standing in for the Captain in his absence at another event.
Leading teams and scores: 101 points Mike Dines (6), Colin Wink (15), Des Smith (27) and Richard Walker (24). 98 points Susan Lumb (13), Carol Shaw (24) Andy McTighie (28) and Tony Fuller (28). 96 points Roger Hall (28), Jim Beale (16). John Johnston (27), Richard Armstrong (24).
Mike Causley achieved the only two at the 9th Hole.
Hole in One: Mothering Sunday provided a different celebration for long standing member Colin Tipton who playing in his regular three ball achieved a ‘Hole in One’ at the par three ninth. Well done Colin! Many of us shared his success with a drop of his whiskey, although we could not all congratulate him personally as he was duly attending to his Mothering Sunday duties.
Rabbits Spring Stableford: Although the course was very wet after the previous night’s heavy rain which restricted the number of competitors, 38 players entered the competition. However the scoring did not trouble some of our rabbits who returned excellent scores.
Leading scores 46 points Alex McNairn (18). 42 points Richard Walker (24). 41 points Peter Robinson (18).
Seniors Medal: With very poor weather and damp conditions underfoot numbers were severely restricted and only nine holes were played before the competition was declared completed.
Leading scores 35 John Weedon (23). 39 Kevin McCourt (19). Peter Taylor (17) and Chris Griffiths (28).

Pannal Golf Club
Centenary Captain
Timothy Rhodes
Timothy Rhodes who became captain of Pannal in its Centenary year was born in Leeds in 1950. He was educated at Bradfield College in Berkshire and at Bristol University where he read Classics. At school he played in teams for all the major sports as well as golf and squash.
He was a member of the golf team which won the Public Schools Invitation tournament at Woking in 1967.
At university he concentrated on golf and played for the team in all his three years there, the last one as captain.
Timothy’s golfing career began in Leeds in 1964 and he played for the Yorkshire Juniors.
He joined Pannal in 1969 but retained membership at Leeds until 1977.
He played for the scratch team of both clubs and represented the Harrogate Union. His lowest handicap was one and he is currently playing off six.
In 1972 he joined the family textile business and was a director for 24 years before setting up his own agency in 1998. His work has involved more or less weekly trips to London and frequent visits to Italy.
Timothy is married to non-golfing Heather and the couple have two sons who are both Pannal members.
Apart from golf, his life’s passions are cricket, music, books and the annual family holiday with friends in Dorset.
This year Timothy is looking forward to being Captain very much and hopes to put something back into the club where over the years he has formed many friendships and had much pleasure on and off the course.
And while the career is put on hold for this important year he is hoping for a relatively quiet and stress-free existence.
Some hope some might say!
Centenary Lady Captain
Linda Booth
Linda is delighted to be the Lady Captain in Pannal Golf Club’s Centenary Year.
She joined the club in 1985 and has always enthusiastically supported the Ladies golfing section and along with husband Tony, the club’s mixed social events.
Linda’s handicap has remained higher than she would have like but she has represented Pannal in team matches and collected a number of medal spoons and prizes over the year.
Linda has served on the ladies’ committee with particular responsibility for house matters and was also the first lady member to be elected to the club’s full committee where she served a three-year term.
Given her present involvement with Centenary matters, time is of the essence. However Linda still enjoys walking, playing bridge and continues to take a keen interest in the activities of her daughter Susan.
Ladies: The players in the April Medal were greeted by variable weather conditions, which ranged from strong gusts, sleet showers, occasional blue skies and sunshine. The scores reflected this mixed bag of weather.
